Why Do Many People Hate Pentax ?

People needed to be known for what they have, preffer or want. In my country we call them YOYOISTAS or ME-MEISM. They live in facebook, twitter and others "seudo-comunities", trying to be the center of any discusion bringing their point as the last word and nothing more to be said. Here we have some of them, every knows who them for their ethernal posting style. They also have they addicted followers. They only can talk about the new button or the colour of the screen of the new camera.

If they could get focused more on taking shots, developing their skills, more than talk and talk about the same bored theme. Maybe we can take them seriusly.

I am a Nikon user but I don't hate Pentax.

Pentax made some great products (since film era):
  • Pentax 67 medium format SLR ( I own one and it is a dependable camera many pros use). Canon and Nikon don't even have medium format cameras back in film days.
  • Pentax 645D (medium format DSLR). Wow....if only I have the money.....
  • If Pentax goes bankrupt, then there will be less competition in the market. That means Canon or Nikon has more "freedom" to charge their customers whatever they want.
one thing that I always fail to understand is, why there are so many people hate pentax?

what sin did pentax commit to them? I have met many of the haters, and believe it or not, most of them even NEVER try any single pentax camera in their life.

this phenomenon is just stupid..

I personally may be critical to some specific products, but I never hate any brand to that extent..

Just look how many people here use the canikon derogatory term.
I didn't know that was considered derogatory. Is this a general consensus or just your own? It doesn't really matter to me as I don't use it, just wondering if people could really be upset by it's use.
Think about it Russell: If Nikon users used the term PenSonTax to refer to the companies that were not Nikon or Canon don't you think that would have a negative connotation to it?

Or rather, just look at posts of people that use the term: do you find people that use the term post comments that have positive things to say about Canon or Nikon?
I was always under the impression it was a courtesy to canon and nikon users so that search engines did not find discussions only nominally related to their cameras.

But checking google I think you are correct and its used as a pejorative term, I will hence forth not be using it.

I was not aware that there are a great many Pentax haters in this world. Most other photographers are either indifferent towards or completely ignorant about the brand.

Rob

I was never aware of this. Round where I live Pentax is a well known respectable camera, at least amongst "serious" photographers. It is true that many more people buy Canon and then maybe Nikon, but I don't think that it's because they hate Pentax.

For me the more choice I get the better.

I find the same kind of hatred towards Sony, although perhaps it's more understandable.

For example, someone might say, "I hated my Sony discman, so I'm never buying a Sony digital camera", even though they are completely different divisions of the company.

In any case, I started with Pentax, but then moved to Sony. I don't hold any grudges against any company and will use whatever represents the best value and features for me. In my own opinion, I found that the earlier Sony's, such as the Sony a900, really actually are Minolta lineage cameras.

Much like Pentax, the Sony a900 offers great ergonomics and in-body stabilization, so it was a no brainer for me. I don't really feel the same way about the SLT design though.

That being said, in Japan, there isnt much fanboy-ism for any company whatsoever. I see my fair share of Pentaxes/Sonys and even the occasional Sigma! And they arent hated, apparently.

I agree it is not hate, it is usefullness. I think most people that come to DPR have, even as a novice at photography, have or had a desire to become a professional and make a living doing it. Call it a dream or just wishful thinking. We would not be here if we weren't into this pretty big time.

But the truth is if you had to make a sole living doing photography Pentax would not be at the top of your list gear wise these days. It would be Canon or Nikon, more likely Canon for the last 10 years or so. And if you are into Canon everyone else is just way out of the picture. Most Canon users where Nikon users years ago in the film days. I was. And Pentax has been pretty far out of it for a long time. I have had a few Pentax 67's and loved them.

But a heck of a lot of people these days never even heard of Pentax and could care less. Like I said it is not hate, just they don't know about Pentax's past, so are not going to sink a ton of money into it. So it is pretty much doomed in the long run.

I used to be a Nikon, Minolta, and Lumix user. But then since I've got some Pentax legacy lenses from my relative who doesn't into photography anymore, I sold my D90 kit, and buy a Pentax body. And I still keep my Lumix and Minolta cameras.

At some occasions, I also use my friend's Canon dslr. And frankly speaking, I can enjoy with all those cameras, with their own uniqueness :)

hey, I think you have a more appropriate term. It is 'trolling' yes. Sorry for my english, but I'm not from an english speaking country :)

thanks!
I suspect that what starts out as minor frustration with equipment (Pentax, Nikon, Canon, doesn't matter) ends up becoming a major jihad against other forum posters, not even really against the company anymore. The company is just being used as a proxy to take shots at other posters .

I think that if someone really is trolling, they should simply be ignored. This is the most effective way to deal with it.

I think most people respect Pentax, or at worse are indifferent. I have seen (here) many more talk about Nikon users as sheep, as if a group ignorance caused them to buy Nikon. At this point all dslr's take reasonably good pics.

I hate that Pentax builds such great cameras and lenses that it causes me to buy everthing that they make. My Pentax gear is so danged superior that I shun ALL of the other makers. Besides....

Pentax is made by beautiful people for beautiful people.

...and since I am so danged beautiful, I have no choice but Pentax.

Cheers from your favorite fanboy.

Ron

...... Oops, I forgot something. :-D :-) :-D

I've embraced the derogatory term "Canikon".

I added a "TAXIAN" from "Pentaxian" to my handle here to show my love for all three brands I currently own.

2002 is my 10th anniversary buying into brand new Pentax due primarliy to local shop carrying the brand.

Nowadays no one carries the Pentax locally, which is quite typical in USA market ever since Hoya bought out Pentax in April 2008. That's when the 2 very kinowledgeable local Pentax reps got laid off, April 1st 2008. No need for local Pentax Reps when Hoya retreated their Pentax branded gear from store fronts.

Due to my Pentax full frame frustrations in 2006-2007-2008 I now own Canon and then Nikon gear, all full frame dslrs and full frame lenses, stuff Pentaxians can buy when they go either Canon or Nikon to get the tools they need to fullfill their imaging goals.

I love my remaining Pentax gear, I DO wish there was a full frame option I could have considered in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and now 2012.

I also love the Canon and Nikon gear too.

But alas, I only buy brand new Canikon gear due to their extensive full frame platforms and lens systems.

I still hunt for used Made in Japan Pentax gear, items from their glorious past, you know, classic lenses made to last for years and years of trouble free ownership.

Everything Canikon I bought new in last 4 years still works great, right out of the box.

Oh yeah,

Here's the February 11th 2001 Pentax FULL FRAME DSLR announcement, just a few days short of 11 YEARS AGO now:

The word hate is perhaps a bit overstated, but the masses will generally avoid anything that is ever so slightly different, we're a very sheepish society. I for one can label myself as a marginal.... as everything I like seems to be what the majority don't, and Pentax falls into that category. My only hope is that Pentax will continue making cameras for those who want to do photography as opposed to taking pictures !
