Am heading on an extended tour overseas and have a Canon S45. Now for long periods my only battery charging option is via a car cigarette lighter outlet.

To avoid spending AUS$160 for a full canon car charger package is there a cheaper way i.e. adapter lead that fits the AC charger supplied with the Camera?

Any help appreciated. Make sure you tell me the brand and product # if possible.

Cheers Scooter

I thought you can easily get a 150 or 300 Watts Inverter for around $20 to $40 U.S. which directly plugs into your car cigarette lighter outlet (12V DC) to provide AC 110V/120/V or AC 220V/240V which can by used to power your S45 battery charger and some other electronic/electrical devices such as a portable TV set...

Tell me more :-) This sounds promising.

I will need to convert DC to AC 220V/240V. Had the faint hope I could get such a lead that fits into my exiting CB-2LTE housing, hence I could travel will two leads and one housing.

Am I deluded?

This is a UK site, but have a look to see what the device looks like; go to "Electrical", then "Power Supplies", and look at "modified Sine Wave Inverters"
http://www.maplin.co.uk/

You should be able to find a similar device locally once you know what you're looking for!

Useful aspect of these is that you can then use any (small) mains item in your car (subject to suitability)

A typical RadioShack store carries many such car DC-to-AC converters. I use one my for S30, too. This is the one I am using for $49.99 Canadian (about $32 U.S.):

which converts 12VDC to 120VAC for products requiring up to 150W. Ideal for RVs, boats, auto, DIGITAL CAMERAS and other applications where there is no 120VAC hydro available. Allows you to operate your laptop on most major airlines equipped with 12V plugs. Will run small TVs, VCRs and small stereos...

More details are here:

I am sure you have a RadioShack store in your city, right?

And of course I cam imagine if your country uses 220/240V AC power supply, then the inverter sold in your local stores would provide 12V DC to 220/240V AC (instead of to 110/120V AC)...

Had a look at the inverters and size is an issue for travel. It appears that canon have priced their in car charger very near the cost of these inverters.

Very cunning is that canon company me thinks :-

Have just bought a **** Smith inverter for NZ$140, runs my laptop as well as AA charger and G3 AC adaptor...
Laptop and G3 car charger were going to be more than that each!

Couple of points: the mains charger will take 110 or 240V, so you
could just buy a US inverter online.

For a 240V one, Jaycar operate in NZ as well as Oz, and should have a
100W inverter very cheap - they're $AUS90. http://www.jaycar.com.au , the
category is "inverters", STOCK-CODE: MI5058. For $AUS300 you get 150W
sinewave unit that will run just about anything (the first one should
run your battery charger just fine, but some electronics don't work
well on them)

The mains adaptor is expensive, but will also let you run the camera
off an external battery pack with a little modification. This will, of
course, void your warranty, but it's why I'm buying one.

I found at great inverter for $24.00US @ http://www.dcpowerinverters.com It solves all my needs and it should yours also. Remember that a cigarette lighter adapter should NOT carry more than 300watts- so watch your model choice.
