X-10 - on the way back. Now what ?

I am the Original Poster. I really don't understand the attitude of some that seem to want this camera to fail. Yes, I returned it, and I have a brand new Olympus XZ-1 charging up that arrived on my doorstep today that I'm looking forward to trying. But if it's possible I want the X-10 to be fixed in firmware, and quite possibly would order another copy if they can do so. It's a lovely design, nice form factor, and I LOVED the manual zoom. Coming as a long time Canon DSLR shooter I absolutely hate zoom by button.

Yes it has a flaw - pretty obvious one IMHO, and Fuji shouldn't be forgiven for releasing it in that state, but if you shoot mostly daylight outdoors stuff I think it would be a fine camera to own.

But there's no point in actively wishing it (and it's owners who are past their return window) to fail. I applaud Fuji's innovating designs - it makes all the other manufacturers try harder, which makes the market better for all of us who want to take pictures.

Thanks to all who offered their advice on other possibilities. Now stop bashing each other and go out and take some pictures !

I want mine FIXED.

I love the lens. I hate the sensor

(or the "processing").

And the orbs are NOT solely a night shot problem. They are an indoor, sunset, and sunlight problem too.

There are plenty of daylight shots from the X10 that have ORBS . See the Mercedes image posted?

Yes, I have studied all of the famous orb shots, and yes, I returned my camera because of those posts, and my own experience. I'm not apologizing for Fuj - they screwed up and should own up to it. However I've also seen some really nice pics on this forum from that camera. In my daylight shooting I never encountered any orbs, but then again it's January in Chicago, and during our seeming 3 hours of daylight it's mostly cloudy, so I haven't had the opportunity to really stress it in a sunny situation.

I hope they fix it - to me perfectly round holes seem software related, but I don't have anything to support that in at all. For the sake of everyone who has one, I hope they get it fixed. There's really no reason to actively HOPE that they can't is there ?

I wisjh i had the hope you seem to have but i really dont think its going to be fixable to a degree that makes the X10 worth buying , i think its the sensor thats faulty and i have a feeling now its doomed to be a failure and later this year Fuji might be close to need rescuing themselves like Kodak. !!

Not any good reasons unless Fuji becomes so unresponsive that everyone gives up on the company. But you've said this several times and as far as I can see you're completely wrong. Where are the hordes that HOPE that Fuji can't fix the X10. Do you think the just because people complain about orbs that they're HOPING that Fuji can't fix them? If that's what you're thinking, think again. Maybe people in other forums that own differ brand cameras are snickering and don't care if Fuji succeeds or fails, and some may have dropped into this forum. But the vast majority, including griping Fuji owners and people like me that decided to pass on the X10, hope that Fuji is able to fix - not improve, but fix - the X10 well before the X11 is announced. In the meantime, making unproved and inaccurate assertions that people HOPE that Fuji fails and castigating people that don't share your opinion doesn't help anybody and only worsens the forum atmosphere. If you don't like what you read, it's very easy to skip over those threads and subthreads and read what doesn't upset you.

Where does Fuji Camera division make most of its $$, probably the low end models..the X100 is a niche product which they didn't think would sell as well as it did, therefore the X10,XS1 and the Pro X1..all going for a very small segment of the market..ie the semi pro's..who are very critical about IQ etc... so to me it would be suicide for Fuji NOT to fix the Orb problem, as word gets around and their reputation will be destroyed,at least in this line of cameras... if they don't fix it well enough, then they don't care about sales so much in this segment, as the cheaper models(too many to name!) will be their bread&butter, and the high end models are for rich beta testers!!!

Rumours of its demise have been exorbitant. And wrong.

i have an EP1 anld a stack of Olympus FT kit. You cannot take low light pictures without flash that equal the X10's with any FT camera because of sensor noise which starts to be noticeable at ISOs above 400 on the DSLRs
Are you saying that the X10's higher ISO noise performance is better than that of a dslr?

Much better than the Olly Ep1which had a noisy sensor above 400 or so, or Oly E510, E1 at low ISO it will kill the X10 but above 400 it sucks...but the newer Oly E5 ,Ep3 is much better 1600 is useable now....

Small body, HUGE lens, at least if you really want to match real DSLR quality.

I looked seriously at the NEX series, but their current lenses aren't much. Which means using legacy lenses.

I already find my Canon 60D, on the end of a big, good, lens, too small.

Micro Four Thirds at least combines small lenses with smaller body.

There is very small difference in size between NEX and kit zoom and EP2 and kit zoom.

Difference in IQ is rather huge in favor of the NEX. I had both systems, by the way, kept the Sony and carry it all the time in the pocket of my coat. No problem.
Is the IQ better in RAW with legacy lenses ? because as far as i can tell the Sony Jpegs suck and the native lenses are poor and limited.

Thanks for clarifying.
