I understand there is hack that will allow me to shoot video with my 50D. Has anyone tried it? As long as it is reasonably safe(?) to install I'd really like to try it.

(Terry, if you see this please post a link!)

Is called Magic Lantern. I never used it on a 50D, but I can vouch for it on my 60D.

Actually is not a hack, but an add on piece of software that runs alongside Canon's firmware. In fact, if you don't want to use it anymore, format the card disabling the option to recover ML, and she will boot clean.

Thanks, I found it during a Google search; since the 60D already has video what else does it have that you use?

I actually want it for taping my hummingbirds so I might wait until they show up (April?) before trying it.

Well, I don't know which features on the 60D ML's port are present on the 50D, but I use a lot of features there, and not only video stuff, it has a lot of focusing aids for Live View, focus trap, brightness capture, precise shutter count, and many other goodies. I love it, and that is one major reason I haven't upgraded to the 7D, since I'll loose all my ML stuff.

I believe the 50D video mode was developed by capturing the LiveView feed into a movie. How did it got it, I don't know, but is brilliant, if you ask me. I also think there is no audio, since the 50D doesn't have an internal mic, but I don't know. Check out the manual and you can also ask questions at the ML google support group: http://groups.google.com/group/ml-devel

Magic Lantern. I tried it on my 50D a few days ago. It adds HD video capability and a few other nice tricks. I wouldn't get too excited about the video. As the 50D has no sound recording hardware, your movies will be silent unless you use separate sound recording equipment.

One thing I did like about ML was the ability to take up to nine bracketed shots. The standard firmware only allows three.

It seems safe and stable enough. Make sure you follow the installation instructions carefully.

I'm not concerned with audio (yet?), in fact I'm just as happy to have no sound at all, but I would like fairly decent 1080p video and from what I've seen so far (mostly on youtube) the 50D video is not too bad. Thanks for you input.

Howie, Martin,

Many thanks for your short discussion. I've installed Magic Lantern on my 50D.

It's Awesome!

I have an old 1G cf card and I'm tempted to try Magic Lantern on it just to see if it works at all (I'm sure the card is too slow for video). In the meantime I found an ADATA 32G CF card for less than $70 but a couple of camera store guys have advised me against using Adata cards (Big surprise!!). Does anyone out there use them and find them reliable, or otherwise... thanks!

--Yeah, I installed it and it is great!, installing it is sooo easy, but navigating through the menus is hard, but it comes with a pdf with instructions. The video quality is amazing tooo.
Sorry I don't have a video uploaded anywhere to show you.
