RAW samples have been posted on two sites, both French:

http://www.focus-numerique.com/test-1354/compact-canon-g1-x-powershot-bruit-electronique-12.html

(click the first link marked "Vous pouvez également télécharger les fichiers Raw")

and

http://www.focus-numerique.com/test-1354/compact-canon-g1-x-powershot-exemples-photos-15.html
(click one of the "Télécharger le fichier raw" links)

Both sites allow you to download Canon CR2 RAW files. They will not open in Adobe Camera RAW 6.6, the current version. I get an error message:

"Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw.
Please visit the Camera Raw help documentation for additional information."

Are the G1X's 14-bit RAW files incompatible with the current CR2 standard?

They usually have to release updates to ACR and other software to read raw files from new cameras.

Yes they will.
What version of ACR do you have?
RAW images open just fine and the images look pretty good IMHO.

Good luck.

The CR2 "standard" is not a single identical format used by all Canon cameras. One thing that is in almost every RAW file is the model name/number of the camera. ACR checks this model and if it's not in the list of supported cameras it won't open the file even though it could. I have for instance opened a Fuji XS-1 raw file after changing the XS-1 into X10 inside the file. The format was the same, bue ACR checks the camera model.

So you might be able to open the file after first binary editing it so the camera model becomes a supported model (with the CR2 format).

I have opened them with Raw Therapee....then auto correction color and contrast in Elements....all i can say is WOW...details and details...full of...great sharpness...even the 15mm sample....

ACR 6.6, Lightroom 3.6 & Lightroom 4 Beta all refuse to open the G1X raw images.

RawTherapee will open them; but the colors are all wrong.
Dcraw will convert them; but again all the colors are wrong.

Very curious as to how you opened them?

Phil.

Just to add, Faststone Image Viewer opens them but again the colours were way off.

Anyone try out RPP (raw photo processor)? It's mac-only, but it sometimes succeeds where all else fail...until profiles for the others get written that is.

Hi, can you please provide a link to the jpgs of these images or post them somewhere so that we can look?

here it goes...remember, unsharp mask was disable in raw therapee, so this is pure conversion...and courtesy of QUESABESDE...Not my pictures....
SCENE..not full size

Crops...100%

  • i have yet to see if dpreview uploading doesnt hurt the file quality....
hope that helps...

Not sure about opening the raw files but I'm a little surprised with the pictures posted at that site.

None of the shots looked like anything special and the portrait of the girl is down right bad.

On top of that sky is blown out in every shot.

Either the photographer didn't know what they were doing or the camera isn't as good as it appeared to be at other sites.

so far lenstip seems to have the best samples, the sample photos for dpreview and those linked up above are not really bad but about same as 2008-2009 Canon APS sensor cameras

RAW files for every camera must be in ACR for an Adobe product to open the RAW files. This happens with every new camera. Adobe must create a new profile for every new camera. This is what Adobe does on their own, not info they are provided by camera manufacturers.

Let's just assume that by the time they ship the camera they'll also ship a version of DPP which supports it. Meanwhile why not ask the websites what they had in mind for viewing what they uploaded?
