I need help with searching for a good GPS unit for my D700. I remember seeing a website with a unit which was self-powered by internal batteries , so it didn't deplete the in camera battery (as I recall. That may be a faulty memory) AND it had a 16 pin connector on the side, so you could use your remote release with the unit mounted (that one I'm sure of).

Does that ring a bell with anyone?

I like the idea of the on-board GPS, but don't like that most systems plug into the 16 pin port, removing the ability to use the remote release.

Thanks,
Mike

Yes, it does. Was looking at these last week. Have to remember the company name though, they also sold them on ebay. They had 4 models, the top 2 models also had compass for directional information which was cool. A couple models had replaceable cables so you could use the same gps unit with different camera bodies (ie D700 or D7000) since they use different connectors.

Will have to look.

Here's what I was looking at.

Best setup I have found is an Aokatech Bluetooth adapter that plugs into the 10-pin socket on the camera and uses the camera's battery for power. This frees up the hot shoe for use with flash. Then you can use any GPS with Bluetooth.

I use a Holex Bluetooth GPS that is the size of a small matchbox, has a rechargeable battery, and can be charged using a USB cable and runs for days on a charge.

Total cost for the two was $160. Aokatech can be ordered from them directly online and it takes 5-10 days to receive it in the mail.

The Aokatech can be used with any Nikon camera with the 10-pin port and GPS capabilities.

This company?

Don't know anything about them.

The Columbus nGPS for Nikon and Fuji DSLR Cameras unit I bought seems to have been discontinued from B&H and only shows up once in ebay. It doesn't have a compass for directional info, but otherwise seems good. It came with its own remote, as some other models do.

KevRoc,

Thanks. The di-GPS Pro L was the one I was thinking of.

Cheers,
Mike

Calson,

After I read your post, I looked at the Aokatech, but I think I'd rather have the receiver and adapter in the same unit. Also, having the remote release capability is a big one with me, since I do mostly landscapes and use the remote for nearly every shot.

Thanks,
Mike

Beshannon,

Thanks. I looked at the Nikon unit and some user reports. Good unit, but for me the Nikon is a bit pricey.

Cheers,
Mike

I bought my GP-1 from B&H from my previous trip to NYC. It lists USD$190 now.

In Canada, it always lists as CAD$240 which is about the same USD$240.

One more note: it comes with a strap clip such that the GP-1 unit can be attached to the strap instead of the hot-shoe.

(Disclaimer, I'm not related to B&H anyhow except I'm a satified customer.)
