X10 buying - on hold for me, and you??

One thing, Orbs, not even something that would form as issue for a pro
Pro's LOVE having their photos randomly decorated with white balls in varying sizes. And they don't have to be pixel-peeped at 100% to see them, either.

Speaking as a non-pro, if I bought even a $75 camera and it had orbs I would return it. Sleek rangefinder styling is not quite enough to make up for ruined photos.

Sorry not paying £450 for a 6 megapixel camera with a fatal flaw ,if the X100 did'nt have sticking aperture blades i may be temped, seems like Fuji of Japan can't make cameras as well as Nikon of Tailand , Nikon has never let me down in all the yrs i have used them.

Interested but will wait till it is way less than $600 and no orb problem.

The orb problem is an overblown issue.... not even 1% of your shots will have enough of it to be an issue. Most will be minuscule to even be noticed. So for now, you're missing out on the very best point and shoot out there, not to mention the coolest looking. The more I use mine, the more I'm loving it.
How can the best point and shoot be the one that ruins its images? I'm sorry, but I think people are cutting this camera way too much slack because it 'looks cool', just like society lets good-looking people get away with things others would not.

I like almost everything about this camera but this disc/orb mess really makes it useless for me at night. And I particularly do like low light/night photography, although not with the X10.

If I know I am going to want to use a small camera around the clock I have to take out my Canon G12 or Panasonic GF2. For daytime only shots I prefer the X10.

With the new Sony Nex 7 also providing competition in this mirrorless area, and giving you an APS C sensor, Fuji had better step up their game.

That depends entirely on what you like to shoot. If you don't do any night photography it's not an issue at all. I do.

....canned it at the last minute and bought an Oly XZ-1 as my go-to P+S instead.

I love low light photography and was very worried WDS would be an issue. I am very happy with the decision I made. I am also very happy to hear that some people are quite happy with their x10. The bottom line is that it's great to have a camera you enjoy using.

I did like some of the features for the x10 vs the XZ-1. I might consider a switch (I do like my cameras..) if/when Fuji fixes the issue but am concerned it might be hardware-related and if a software issue, I fully expect it won't be until Q2 of this year or later for a firmware release that addresses the problem. As I have joked before, you almost need a quarterback wristband with instructions of do's and don't s to guard against WDS....not my kind of $600 (or $200) camera. IMHO, the x10 is flawed and as such, overpriced. The worst thing is the possibility of having a one time precious shot....and then seeing blobs with what should be a high end camera (meaning no blobs!)

Peace out.

When Fuji fix the orb issue I'll buy one. If I had not seen the orbful images I would have probably had one for Xmas- I made a special trip to one of the few camera stores that had it in stock, loved the manual operation and the feel/quality of the camera.

PS I don't consider a valid fix to be "shoot in high ISO" or some other stupid firmware fix that effectively zaps the IQ to work around the issue.

i came i bought and then said x10 is going back due to orb problem. and now i regret it by sending it back so i will buy it again when i have the money and hopefully they will have it fixed by then. r
How many people that would have rushed out and bought the X10, and I'm one of them ... are indeed not making the cash transaction now because of this 'orb' problem. I picked up the llittle beauty only to put it back down and leave the store to wait for the fix before I buy, if something else better comes up in the next month or two then Fudi loose at least this one potential customer.

How many others are holding back.
How many regret buying the X10 now the problem is seen

I suspect actually most who bought are really pleased with it, and expect a good fix soon.
But for me it was just enough to hold off for a while ...

... and if this mess is not cleared up I will not be buying, or advising anyone to buy, one from Fuji.

You can't be a serious camera company and do this.

I have sold my Nikon gear to get money for the X10 but now I am waiting because of the orb issue. In the meantime I am exploring other options. It is obvious that Fujifilm is loosing sales because of the orb problem.

I cancelled my XS-1 order today. (uk).

I asked the shop, who had ordered it for me in November, whether it would be ok for me to return the camera for a refund, should the orbs problem not get fixed.
The shop replied:

"We have heard nothing of the issue(s) you are stating. We would prefer you not to purchase the camera if you feel any issue may be apparent."
First time I've wished that I lived in the USA !!

Rather than get caught £600 out of pocket, I'll wait & see how this issue pans out first.

i bought th camera about 3 weeks back without any knowledge of the orbs issue. i use it to take photos of my kids and after a few hundred prints ( yes, i still prefer prints than looking on computer screens), there is not a single bit of regret in getting the camera or rejecting a photo becos of obs. in fact, i also got the ef-42 as flash photography is very natural with the x10 and gives beatiful skin tones.

yes, one can wait till the orbs problem is solved before getting any x series.for me, even if its oly 2 weeks....i dunno howmay photos i would have lost and the kids grow up everyday!

I even just noted that some people have mentioned it on the Amazon websites for the camera.

I think at least warning people about the issue is a public service.

I was initially disconcerted by the white disk problem having just bought the camera but decided to keep using it for a bit and not immediately throw the baby out with the bathwater.

The fill in flash produces the most balanced shots I've ever seen from a camera, rarely invasive, and the indoor incandescent light shots are more consistently well shot than my DSLR with F2.8 lens.

The camera is not without its foibles, white discs being but one, but overall as a well build camera with ergonomic manual controls, fast lens and flexible sensor I'm thrilled to bits with the it.
An excellent description and the point about fill flash is not to be taken lightly. Another feature of the X10 which I really like is the almost silent shutter. Compared to a DSLR this is most welcome. M43 camera, OTOH have quite noisy shutters in comparision.

Despite agreeing with all your observations I am of the personality that simply fears getting an orb in a shot. As a result, despite the positivies of the camera, and the rather low probablility of getting an orb I regret buying the X10.

Not being judgemental, just an observation about personality type (i.e. my fear of impefection!). So one should ask themselves if they can live with the occasional shot with an orb? Kinda like the occasional shot out of focus or with a really bad exposure.

Also the X10 also does not fullfill my desire for a small light camera which I can take night shots on business trips. It will always gives orbs at 100 ISO and long exposures on a tripod if there are any lights in the photo. A place where every other camera I have owned ususally does a good job.

It takes shots like this fantastic but in bright sunlight with reflective surfaces orbs are a high probability.

Recognizing its limitations as expressed by some people in this forum, I think I'll hold on with my X10. I bought it last November and have come to love it both as a stand alone and a companion to the DSLR. Its feel and carry as well as image quality give personal pleasure. I have been satisfied with most shots taken from it.

I've seen the white disks but realizing the givens, how not to get them is really challenging for the photographer especially during situations already specified by others, e.g., sunset, night shots. It would be really good if Fujifilm reasonably succeeds in its firmware resolution of the WDS problem even if it's a sensor issue as revealed recently. I have tried some night shots using manual (first two here) and EXR settings (last two) at high ISOs; the camera gives less than 6 MB files (2.1-5.0+ MB range). Some pictures especially using EXR settings show the sensor's remarkable light attraction capabilities. I'm satisfied with all of them though.

That depends entirely on what you like to shoot. If you don't do any night photography it's not an issue at all. I do.
and if you don't shoot in bright sunlight while around water or reflections, you might be OK.
