Today the A77 went in for repair after 2 months and 2500 jpgs. The focus confirmation signal stopped working within the first week (it is still switched on but does not sound). And the camera focus is not sharp any more. These two issues will be fixed under warranty here in Thailand where the camera was manufactured and sold before the great flood. The Sony Service Center here is usually very good with repair jobs like this.

The display screen got a bunch of small scratches, all concentrated right in the centre, during week 2 while the top display developed a scratch out of the blue in the past week. These will be replaced, for my account.

In using the camera for the past 2 months I have mixed feelings. It is certainly a very capable machine. I do not care for the video functionality; I wish that it could be disabled with a switch like that used on the A700 for switching the steady shot in and out as it creates extra files on the memory stick which upsets my computer.

The OVF is OK but when the outside light becomes very bright it is exactly useless.

The display screen should always be facing towards the camera and only flipped open when the OVF cannot be used or when reviewing pictures/ video.

And the mode dial switch definitely needs a push button on top to lock it down to keep it from moving.

I also found that both the ISO button and the + - offset button often get pushed by mistake; they should be recessed deeper into the housing in my opinion.

Why the viewing mode (movie/ stills) is not accesable from the Fn button I do not understand either.

The huge file sizes forced me to change my workflow already. Perhaps it is time to rather move to FF in the next year or so as there is better quality glass available for FF especially in the range from 24mm to 70mm in FF where the Zeiss 16-80 is supposed to work for cropped frames..

My Zeiss 16-80 also went in for repair today as the focus ring got stuck; they are changing the two rubbers at the same time. This lens is really huge disappointment to put it politely (Andrew, in Bicentennial Man would have described it more accurately.)

The software version was, until this morning 1.03.

OVF no good in bright light..I presume you mean the EVF...nothing wrong with it in bright light!! and I live in the tropics!!..leaves one questioning the credibility of your other statements!!

Too much BS in OP to even speak for OP's ownership of the camera. Quit spreading FUD and inventing repair stories to make Sony build quality look questionable. OVF? Seriously? Can't see the viewfinder in bright light? What a load.

You need more practice and need to be more careful using your camera...

You scratched your rear lcd, knock your dial around, push the wrong buttons a lot, scratched the top display, damaged your lens focus ring, and somehow all these things get listed by you as negatives or things needing improvement on the camera? I have a radical idea. How about you be a bit more careful with your valuable electronics?

Just a couple of thoughts:

On the movie/stills viewing, this is a common complaint. I've got a feeling Sony's programmers balked at developing a system that would navigate the movie and stills folders, combined. This is something that should be in a future firmware upgrade, and it should be pretty easy to also program in, say, a flashing frame on the thumbnail so that you know it's a movie file before you try to play it. Ideally, they'll give you a menu option to choose whether to keep it all as separate viewing modes, or merge them.

As for the quality of the 16-80 lens, there's nobody who will argue that it's as anywhere near capable as the 24-70 (in their overlapping range) - but that doesn't mean you have to move to FF to use it (the 24-70); you can buy it for your A77 and enjoy the results.

I'm wondering if your fingers are too large for the camera, or if maybe you just haven't gotten familiar enough with it yet. If the former, that might be a reason to move to FF (larger body assumed). Also, I'll gently echo the advice about taking better care of your camera; it's not a Canon 1D (nor does it cost as much!). Best of luck with the repairs, and I hope you'll give it a second chance and a refreshed view.

P.S. You didn't mention re: the focus problem if the camera + lens had gotten knocked around a bit. If that happened, the lens could have developed a problem as easily as the camera. Luckily, the SLT's all allow magnified manual focus, so hopefully you took advantage of that once you knew you had a problem.

I wish I was as confident that Sony is going to change things with firmware updates.
The various bugs haven't even been fixed. :(

Hi, Dennis. I'm often in the same boat re: confidence that Sony will fix things. But they do seem to be aware of reviewers' criticisms, and this one (along with the terrible menu system and the lack of a "my menu" type of feature) has rubbed them all the wrong way.

They're already working on the next model. Feature changes?
The owners manual has already been printed.

Cheers,
