I'm hoping some Japan-based readers can help me with this question.

If I decide to purchase a S45 or G3 in Tokyo, is it possible to get an international warranty on the camera?

Regards,
Julius

I'm not from Japan. But I can tell you it's not possible.

I'm from Hong Kong.

To make my point more clearly, you can only send your camera (with
the warrranty card, in Japanese) back to Japan for servicing. They do
cover one year warranty for that.

Yes, it's quite possible (I'm not sure what the other poster was referring to); in fact if you buy in Akihabara (or anywhere) at a duty-free store, you would have a difficult time getting a Japanese warranty (which are better than U.S. ones, btw, at least for Sony cameras).

I've lived in Japan for eight years and have bought many cameras here. These duty-free electronics shops have special models just for export that come with international warranties and instructions in English.

I'd have to add that this has been my experience buying Sonys in Japan; my Canon was purchased in Okinawa and I wanted a Japanese warranty, but I'm sure had I bought in Akihabara it would have been as outlined above.

Thanks Helen!

That's exactly what I wanted to hear! Are the cameras with international warranties much more expensive than the ones with Japanese warranties?

Hi Julius,

No, I don't think so. The prices in Akihabara tend to be a bit higher than what I pay here in Okinawa because my retailer here often discounts things by 10 percent below what seems to be the "agreed-upon nationwide price." But then here I have to pay the 5 percent sales tax, while in Tokyo I don't. So it ends up being close. But I don't think the warranty has any bearing on the price. Sure does on service though -- Sony cameras in the U.S. only have a 3 month parts and labor, while Japanese warranties are for a year for both. I don't know what international warranties cover.
