I am looking to buy a head for my gitzo carbon fiber tripod

I am looking at any recommendatationd, I want the head to be light and to have a quick release.

I have looked at

Bogen 2362Qr which is 1.25 lb and $50

Gitzo G1276 m 1.25 lb $178

thx

Which ever head you use, try and use the Arca Swiss type QR, instead of the Bogen/Manfrotto style.

You will pay more for it, however you will get movement with the bogen style and you won't want that.

You might want to check out kirkphoto.com, they use the acra style system.

Recently I switched from Arca to The Ultimate BALL HEAD made by ACRATECH. This is amazing head and full compatibility with Kirk and Arca. They even made custom plate for my Kodak DCS 760.

Well, Bogen does make QR with a lip that prevents camera twist. It's not ideal, but then it's much cheaper. On the other hand, I never liked the arca style locking mechanism.

I can't seem to find the model you describe, and you don't mention what camera you will use, however, I can recommend the Bogen/Manfrotto 3030 quick release head. I use one on my Hakuba carbon fibre legs, and I love it. It cost $55.00 and has a very useful classical pan / tilt system with large easy to use rubber handles, and a proven QR system. I use it with my Canon D 60 and I find it very useful both in the studio and in the field. It also comes in green color for Gitzo users. I bought another base plate, ( they are very readily available), and put it on my telephoto lens, for really quick and safe changes.

PS. Now that I recall, the machining on the vertical tilt was a little rough when I bought it, and I had to smooth it down with some emery paper: works great now. You might want to try before you buy. ( I got mine on the 'net). I have had several Bogen tripods and heads for video and still, and I have always found them to be an excellent value, and useful for the job at hand.

Well I made my decision
The Ultimate BALL HEAD made by ACRATECH
The workmanship is beautiful I look foward to many stable, long exposures

--Read this, http://www.bythom.com/support.htm He is right, I have a back room full of old tripods and heads, get the Kirk Photo BH-1 or Arca Swiss Monoball B-1 ball head. I got the Swiss B-1 (From B & H) and the plates from RRS, they work fine.

The only question is do you get it first, or buy the "just about as good" first and get the right stuff second or third??
