Should I stick with a Sony, or should I go third party? because I haven't heard many good thing about the dt lenses. Is a f3.5 really that slow for a 35mm?

Sony a100, and I mean a 35mm lens itself. Well under $500, really. Slow when compared to f/1.4, f/1.8 f/2.8. Clearly it is slower than those, but I think you can get a 35mm f/3.5 for much cheaper than f/2.8 and faster. I'm just curious to know if f/3.5 gives a good bokeh with a 35mm lens.
--what camera are you using? what is your budget? Are you using film? You keep saying 35 mm ( in your topic line ) and in the body of your post.
Is f/3.5 really that slow??? compared to what?

Are you thinking of the right lens? The SAL35f18 is pretty much loved in this forum and elsewhere.

Everyone would like to have better construction on this lens, but heck, if it breaks I can afford to buy another and another...

"It may surprise you but regarding the sum of its optical qualities it is actually a better choice than the "mighty" (albeit outdated) Sony 35mm f/1.4 G - Sony's professional grade full format 35mm lens."

I must have been mistaken. Well damn, that was my next question is, why is there such a gap between the Sony f/1.4 and f/1.8? :|

The f1.8 is a DT lens while the f1.4 is a full frame lens. DT lens is easier to design because of the smaller image circle. That being said manufacturing has improved so much in the past 20 years that, optically speaking, the newest DT lenses can easily keep up with the old "legendary" lenses (the beercan comes to mind)......
