Furrukh,

You are really testing your camera here. The blue subject noise (for lack of a better term, 'cause Phil calls it red channel noise?) is showing a bit here. Unless you are looking for the film grain look, the noise needs some help.

I don't know if it's the thick grey boarder or what, the blue looks a little off to me. The white on the logo looks good, so I can't figure out why the blue looks odd to me.

Hope you don't mind me being critical, but I hope to start a trend of constructive criticism here. Most posters here are way too nice. I for one wish everybody is more picky and tell what they really think.

regards,
gordon

Hi Gordon. I don’t mind criticism, or analysis of my images. Actually I like it, since it shows how other people look at images. Here is another one with a lighter border. After posting the older one, I changed the border, and like the lighter border:

The reason why this image is sitting so close to noise, is also the reason why the colors are a bit odd. The original was very flat, and underexposed. It really looks bland. I pushed the curve all the way to its limits. The points on the curve for this image are sitting right on the critical edge. One little push and noise becomes too objectionable and the colors fall apart. The sky is almost flat in the original. I had other better exposed images of this scene, but in those I did not like the way the wind was blowing the umbrella. This image had the best curves in the umbrella produced by the wind. My rule is to go for the image with the most beauty, even if it costs a bit in grain, and color accuracy. When I look at images, I always notice shapes and forms, and how they relate to each other. It is funny, but I have a very high tolerance for noise, and almost never notice noise. But the way shapes relate to each other is extremely important for me.

Cheers!

Sounds like a good rule. I'll keep that in mind.

I think your painting background really show through here. And that's what I like about a lot of your shot. Keep up the good work.

Excellent shot (IMHO). I like the use of shape and colors as well, I am not sensitive to noise as much. After adjusting the curves, have you tried to "despeckle" image in photoshop? That may get rid of the noise leaving the details in the photograph visible.

Thanks Jay! Good suggestion. I keep on forgetting about the “despeckle” filter. After applying the “despeckle” filter to this image the noise has become less noticeable. After reading your post, I went back to the windmill image that I posted today, and applied this filter. The noise there decreased enough so that I could tweak the curve a bit more to get more detail in the sky.

Cheers!

Forget the technical stuff. When I look at that photo, I'm right there--wherever that beach happens to be!!! Joan C
