Flipbac Camera Grip

I think I will try a grip on my J1. Nikon actually could have made the grip part larger and used that space for battery since even the smallest N1 lens sticks out more than a grip.

I have one coming (should have shipped) and think I will likely use it, as I do find the grip to be inadequate at times.

I hate being the only nay-sayer but I wouldn't. It's something I have about sticking glue on my camera. If it comes off does it take paint with it and how hard is it to remove? The Nikon grip for the J1 looks real nice. Yes it's expensive, yes you have to unscrew it to get to the compartment but it is form fitting and I think it adds to the look of the camera. I'm waiting for the V1 grip to be in stock, it's $130 but that's me. In the meantime I use the bottom part of the case for the V1 Im fussy.

Part of the instructions:

TO REMOVE OR REUSE:

No-mess 3M adhesive allows the grip to be removed without leaving residue or damaging the camera body. After removing the grip, cover the adhesive with the original backing material for storage so that you can reattach the grip.

I tried it and it is true.

This one will be easy to remove without any damage to the camera. It won't block the access to the battery/card compartment. Wraparound design makes it look and feel as an integral part of the cam without awkward add on appearance.

The Flipbac Grips and the Franiec grips both use 3M adhesives. Both easily removed without damaging the camera.

Almost camera gear is made in China, some in Japan. It is a shame that the Americans can only make a metal stick on grip, quite humorous really. The Franiec grip is good but overpriced by $20. I have the G4 on my V1 and love it. It doesn't look awkward at all, just a different style, quite similar to some of the factory Olympus grips.

Take care,
MB

Why would you say that?
America still is the source for most advanced technology in the world.

Unfortunately, the advancements are either licensed, farmed out or simply stolen by unscrupulous companies all over the world. Not really humorous.

As for the price you need to realise that you are not comparing two apples to each other. The specific production cost is different for either approach and it is reflected in price.
It doesn't look awkward at all, just a different style, quite similar to some of the factory Olympus grips.
And this is the main difference. It is easier to copy someone else's design using "one fits all" concept than come up with something unique, perfectly matching the camera design and providing uncompromising handling performance enhancement for specific camera model. Having said that it is up to user what he/she wants to put on their camera when making purchasing decision for particular accessory. I don't pretend that my product should appeal for everyone or every budget. We have different brands and models in cars, watches, clothing, homes and so on. Horses for courses, as they say...
BTW my grip is available now.

Cheers

Just ordered one of these grips - thanks for your impressions everyone. For $14 including shipping, it seemed like a no-brainer as the lack of grip is one of my few complaints with the V1 and it's certainly a bargain compared to the official Nikon V1 grip!

Richard, appreciate your defense,

I am not sure how shipping and "made in the US" benefits the end user other than adding expense. It implies that "American" must be better than other countries mail service or manufacturing abilities.

There are very few new ideas or designs in this world. Both the Flipbac or Franiec are not new ideas or designs. The challenge you face, is because of using inflexible metal, a new grip model is needed every time a suitable camera comes out. Your volume is low and production cost high.

Got mine, put it on and love it. Big improvement in handling (IMO), and actually looks good. You can actually shoot with just your right hand if you need to. Well worth the $10.

More like clarification not defense.

Majority of users of my accessories (and I believe readers of forums) are based in USA. They benefit from faster delivery times compared to international mail.

Since the invention of wheel? I see science and technology evolving on daily basis.

Every camera has different control layout and handling characteristics. Without optimisation, any protrusion on camera face won't address the differences. This is why my grips are custom made for specific camera model and this is why they differ in design.

You are correct that associated cost to design and manufacture one of a kind, perfectly balanced dedicated accessory in lower volumes would be higher than mass produced "one fits all" parts.

Cheers
