If this feature will be added, can touchscreenbe a fireware update or necessitates a next generation nex7?

No, it cannot be added as a simple update. You'd have to replace the screen with a touchscreen, and then replace the SW with a version that has touch support enabled.

As Sony said that pros/enthusiasts don't like touch that much, that is why they left it out, I don't see it coming. Yes, touch focus might be a nice thing to play with, but as the 7 has many more controls then the 5N, the touchscreen is really not that important.

It can not be a "firmware update". It's a hardware feature.

Anyway the ONLY useful feature on a touch screen is focus selector in my oppinion , and I would not use a camera which require a touch screen to operate (so you don't have another way to use the UI).

I have been surprised how useful it is, since I bought a 5n a couple of months ago. If I bought a 7 now, I would really miss the touch screen.

Sony could have made the touch screen feature as a switchable option on the NEX 7. I can see why the touch focus selection can be more intuitive and handy for the rest of us.

Right. But the crowd that wants touch focusing would be better off with the 5n. I much prefer a touch-less screen on all my devices except something like an iPhone.

Not to start anything, but touch focusing (or touching screen in general) is a very basic feature that isn't welcome on a pro-grade camera like the 7. I'm glad they left it out.

Is the touchscreen only used for focusing? Can it be used as a shutter button as well? I like how the Panasonic G3 and Olympus E-P3 has it where you can just touch the screen and it'll focus and take the picture in an instant. I miss that and wish the 7 has it.

Get the EVF for the 5n and then tell us what you think of the touch screen. The two features don't make a great combination.
I believe you. But I don't plan to buy the EVF.

The main job I have done so far with the 5n was to digitize several hundred half-frame transparencies. I found the sensor was just good enough for this, and because you can focus carefully the results are better than from a scanner. For that focussing, the touch screen has been extremely useful.

Pro-grade? That depends on what kind of professional photography you have in mind. Neither model replaces a Sinar studio camera, for instance.

For something like that you are better off with focus peaking, no? Since you have plenty of time to shoot a still subject?

Haha sorry, wrong nomenclature, I meant more along the lines of "enthusiast". Tell you what though, there's a video on YouTube showcasing the 10 fps burst on the NEX-7 of a guy doing a photoshoot. I believe he's a professional photographer as well. Seems sort of propagandish...but still neat to see all the motion and detail the 7 can capture, here's the link, and hey it even has some fun house music to go with it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnFSkGBe4QA

That's personal favorites. I've some cameras with touch screen, but NEVER used it (Lumix G2, G3). For me it makes only sense with Sony TX7, TX9, TX100 ... because these cameras have NOOOOOO buttons :-)

Thanks, thanks, thanks ... that NEX5 (I have) and NEX7 (I'll get) doesn't have touch screen! :-)

If viewing through the EVF, is there any other way of focusing without pulling your eye away to change the focus point? Does focus peaking work though the EVF as well?.

As mentioned, a touchscreen would require a hardware change as well as a firmware update.

As there are currently no NEX-7's available, I purchased the Panasonic GX1, which does have touchscreen.

Very annoying. It is now permanently turned OFF.

The touch screen is really useful on the 5N, but this feature would be totally useless. The AF on the NEX is way too slow for the touch shutter to be useful. On the E-P3 and the Gx1 the AF is pretty much instant.

Touchscreen minimizes moving mechanical parts, which ironically has been the downfall of my beloved Canon G11. The selector dial (probably through use) has become so spasmodic in operation that it renders the camera useless. Touchscreen would simply need a reboot of its firmware.

It's A LOT cheaper and easier to replace a broken button than replacing a broken touch screen. Just throwing that out there. If you don't have a screen you can touch, then you are less likely to put pressure on it. Besides, I hate how ALL touch screens lose their tactility over time, when you get them brand new they are responsive to the lightest touch. Over the products' lifespan, you have to push harder and longer for anything to register.

Example? I have an old iPod touch (2nd gen), and over the few years I've owned it it has went from the most responsive screen I have used to just "meh".

I bet everyone who wants the touch screen is under 30 years old. :)

I can't see how it can be helpful when you have to hold the camera in one hand to be able to touch the screen with the other.

Give me the EVF, eye up to the camera, allowing stability, centre or spot focus and shoot away.

The touchscreen on the 5N is a quick way to enlarge your focus point.

I guess that Sony figured out in their usibilty test, that people looking through the viewfinder would touch the (touch)screen with their nose :). Switching it on/off would have required an additional button on the camera.
