I want to reorganize my galleries in smugmug. I see and have selected a category and moved some. But I can not assign a new category to the current galleries that have a sub category. The new target category that I select only has two sub-categories and I want to add to this list. For example I want to assign a category of weddings (no problem) with sub category of Prior to, Wedding, Reception, etc.

There has to be a way to add additional subcategories.

Well I thought that I would give a post a try. I am more than happy with Smugmug btw. I have tried Smugmug customer service.

Hi Carl,

My name is Zac and I work for SmugMug. Did you not get a reply from our help desk or did the response not answer your question? We're standing by nearly 24 hours a day 365 days a year to answer questions, usually within an hour and sometimes faster :).

Our site organization works like this: CATEGORY --> SUBCATEGORY --> GALLERY --> IMAGE. Your images must be in galleries, and galleries must be in categories. You can also add an extra level of sort between categories and galleries, using subcategories. They allow you to subdivide a category like Weddings or Sports into smaller groups, so your viewers can easily find the galleries they want to see.

Our hero, Rich, has set up a site that demonstrates that quite nicely. Look here, and click the Galleries link: http://richw-t3.smugmug.com/

This part is important You can create Custom Categories or Subcategories in your Control Panel, on the Customize tab. To change them in your Galleries, just go to your Gallery Settings. Categories are under Essentials, and Subcategories are under Extras. You can move several galleries at one time, using your Multiple Galleries tab.

Look here to see more about adding categories and subcategories: http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/93306

And here you can see more about your gallery settings: http://help.smugmug.com/customer/portal/articles/93307

When you have your galleries in the categories and subcategories, just the way you want them, you can change your homepage gallery display to show categories, if it's not that way already. That's a simple mouse click in the upper right corner of the display box.

Let me know about your help desk experience, Carl. We want to help :).

I'm glad to see that SmugMug answered your question for you! I am a happy SmugMug user also but they do have some quirky rules/policies. I've been trying to buy a multi-year renewal for several years now without any luck, So when they announced a three year gift package I thought okay now I can finally buy a three year renewal--not so according to my first "HERO" reply. So I tried again and the response is that I can create a new email address (I've had the same one for years), gift myself a three year SmugMug memebship, call Smugmug and they would transfer the three years to my existing account. Wow--talk about quirky and the customer doing extra work! This is the first company ever to refuse to take my money -- just saying :0)
