I am trying to see some good photos at 200mm taken with the D7 but all I can find are blurry, or out of focus photos..that show even when rescaled. Is it so hard to take 200mm photos with the D7? does it have problem focusing at 200mm not in macro mode? Does anyone have good zoo photos?

I have noticed also that many photos are washed out highlight. The photo seams correctly exposed but the clouds are washed out of some other highlight are. Is there a dynamic range problem with the D7?

I have taken some zoo photos with mine. It did really well, but you really NEED to use a tripod at 200mm. Its really easy to get camera shake when pressing the shutter without one. I'm going to even get a remote shutter release just for this purpose.

I don't know but I was able to handheld my c700 at 380mm no problem up till 1/30s...this is almost twice the zoom and i got sharp photos:

Here is one:

http://www.pbase.com/image/691306

that's only 2mp camera so i am expecting to be able to do the same with the D7...

Can you show me one of your best long zoom photo at the zoo? or a bird?

Hi Daniella:

Do the shots really have to be taken in a zoo? The shots above (50.7 mm actual focal length, 200 mm equivalent for 35 mm format) are not unique from the standpoint of focus. I have not experienced focus problems.

Daniella, this was a test of my AF, after UG of my D-7. It was taken

handheld, standing on a chair--- of Ants milking aphids in the throat

of a two inch Mandevilla flower. No attachments, 200mm macro

w/2X on and flex focused on the rear of a 1/8th inch ant. Otherwise,

400mm macro with DofF about a half a mm. I got more picture

than I had hoped for, not pristine, but I like it! and you would have

a tough time seeing it with the naked eye. The D-7 will DO whatever

you ask it to. So I got a little "noise", so what!!! Elephants are easier!

It looks good, but it's macro mode. I was more looking for something taken at a longer range and with a deeper field of view. In macro mode it's too easy to get out of focus area, but in zoo photos especially, we usualy are at some distance from our target and more tings shoudl be in focus..if everything is blurred, then there is a problem. I have not seen a really sharp image taken at 200mm and long range, not macro.

I have some photos but too small to judge if the lack of sharpness was because of the resampling.

It look so far as if the D7 do much better at macro than it does at 200mm in teleconverter mode, or am i wrong?

Hello Jak,

Those are nice but I was hoping to see some from the D7 as this is the camera that i bought. Is it the same lens and focus system in the D7i then in the D7? is it the same quality of image at 200mm? your photos look pretty good, although at that small size it's hard to tell if the original was sharp or not.

Daniella, I haven't followed this forum much lately so I don't know whether anyone has directed you here or not. Most of the photos in the early contests were taken with the original D7; as other Minolta cameras were released, some are with later models. There's a little bit of everything in the contests.

Hi Daniella,

Here are a couple at 200mm on the D7i, taken at Singapore Zoo. These are straight out of the camera

http://www.pbase.com/minolta

This was at 200mm...
not a zoo, but a woodland trail shot taken on Chincoteaque Island this past May.
The fawn is wild, but was used to humans walking the trail to see the Ponies.

Camera was on the tripod, but the legs weren't spread, so I used it more like a monopod.
:

Of course this was prepared for web viewing. My originals are all on a PC that's not hooked up to the net.

Hope this is more what you were looking for.

John,

No need to buy one. You can make a remote release at home for a few bucks.

Some of the pics from Singapore bird park and zoo. All taken on my FIRST day with the 7i. Most are at 150-200mm.

; (larger version of thumbnail) is as close as I can get the category "zoo" photo. It is a cropped section of a D7Hi photo hand-held at 200mm.

There are also some hand-held telephoto shots at http://super.nova.org/D7Hi/F001/ The originals are much sharper than the resampled copies on the web

I've been quite impressed with the stability of the camera at slow shutter speeds. The D7Hi lens is tack sharp and has no problem focusing at all focal lengths. Any unsharpness in samples you've see is no doubt due the the photographer's abilty to hold the camera still and press the shutter without jerking it.

those are very good photos although a bit small to see the blur problem.

In this photo for exemple..it's an awesome photo but am i imagnining thing or the focus seamed to be set farther away than the bird? the grass in the back seams more sharp than the grass near the bird:

http://www.pbase.com/image/973941

This one is pretty good...i would really like to see the full size image:

http://www.pbase.com/image/2661970

And i would really like to see the original of this falcon too:

http://www.pbase.com/image/3045696

I have seen some sharp looking long zoom images from the D7i but not from the D7, is it not capable of doing it?

Wast that taken with a D7? It's is out of focus or is that simply shake blur? hard to tell without the info on the shutter speed...

http://www.pbase.com/image/879028

Same thing here..out of focus? it's quite blurred.

http://www.pbase.com/image/879032

So far this is the best for sharpness that i have seen and it's really good photo too:

http://www.pbase.com/image/919182

maybe I am too picky not sure but I was getting quite sharp long zoom handhald shots with my c700, even with a teleconverter attached. All long zoom photos that i have seen from the D7 seams also to use quite a slow shutter speed compare to my C700. that might be the cause.

For example, this is one shot taken with my 2mp c700 at 380mm plus a Tcon 14 1.45x teleconverter attached:

http://www.pbase.com/image/1989482

These one with the c700 only:
http://www.pbase.com/image/4637525
http://www.pbase.com/image/4637539
http://www.pbase.com/image/4637538

I am just hoping for too much if i expect to get at least that good results with the D7 at long zoom?

but I see some problem in the sharpness with your zoom photos at long zoom. For example, this in this photo there is practically no detail in the bird:

http://www.pbase.com/image/9380634

Where was the focus set? It's hard to tell. Another problem that i have noticed with the D7x serie is that it tends to blow out the highlight. Why do everybody choose to shoot at slow shutter speed? A faster shutter speed would avoid motion blur and blown out highlight?

You can see this in the racoon photo where the front legs of the racoon loose detail due to the strong highlight.
