I don't know if this has been asked before, but how many shoot video with their Pentax DSLRs? I've had my K-7 since September and tried the video feature only yesterday. I did not find it easy to use. Neither was I impressed with the video quality. It was no way near what I was getting with my small Olympus HD point & shoot camera/video cam. Just curious. Regards.

for the record..... I have never tried.
Dont know why..... I just forget its there.....
might play with it one day..... but then again..... I doubt it.....

That's how I felt until I got curious yesterday and gave it a try. BTW, I have ordered a proper videocam to compliment my K-7. Cheers.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
A thing of beauty is a joy forever.
A picture is worth a thousand words.

Your K-7 is pretty capable as far as video goes, even if not what you'd call cutting edge. The strange video formats and lack of full manual video setting might put one off. But just the same, you CAN get excelent results if you take your time and work your way @ these issues.
Here's one shot completely with the K-7:

DSLR video is more like movie making video...i.e. to do it right:
  • you NEED to use an external mic or you end up recording SR or wind noises
  • it's best for narrow DOF story telling
  • you should have 30sec max points of view (which is why having a 30min limit for video isn't a big deal)
  • craploads of hard drive and flash space to store all the data
  • a slider/tripod w/ fluid head so you can do smooth motion
  • controlled constant lighting sources because you don't always have enough light to record at 60p or even 30p
Watch a commercial or movie next time and watch for all the view changes and listen to the audio. That's what makes them compelling.

It's totally different from the typical handheld P&S/camcorder video that records 10-15 minutes of jerky motion w/ pretty bad sound to capture a life's moment (not that anything's wrong w/ that, but it's different from what typical DSLR video usage is for)...

I use the video on my K5, which has some format differences from the k7 I believe.

I get great results, with good visual quality. The sound is not so good; you need an external mic (there are different types, depending on what you want to do), though if you are indoors with no wind or noise interference it can do ok

My beef is it has no auto-focussing once you start the video - I think they wanted to avoid the noise it makes on the recording, but with an external microphone that is no problem

Also more manual control would be nice – but with a good prime you can make video with lovely textures and rendering, change lenses with different characteristics, like when you make stills

Forgot to include that in my list...you use something called a focus puller as part of the storytelling. AF during video will often choose the wrong thing to focus on for your story, so that's not used by movie makers...even Canon 5D users...

It's not a camcorder or P&S...and yes the D7000 has this feature, but if you're doing the storytelling thing, it's not used...

Thank you all very much for your valuable comments and suggestions. Much appreciated. I will definitely give it a try (K-7 video) one day. I am expecting delivery of a dedicated videocamera (Panasonic HDC-HS900) on Monday. Best regards.
