Hello, I just purchased a D5100 and tried to plug in 2 x 16GB class 6 SD cards and always get an error message...

After looking on Google it seemed a firmware update was needed. I installed the new firmware from Nikon but the 2 cards still don't work at all.

I tried to format the cards many times with my computer using FAT32 and default settings, the 2 cards work on my other cameras but the D5100 refuses to read them.

Does anyone have an idea ?

Thanks !

What brand are they?

I stick to Lexar and I've never had any problems. I tried a cheapie one of the guys at work had and my D7000 wouldn't read or format it.

Interesting, I own a D40X, T2i and now a D5100. Both Nikon cameras don't read nor format the 16GB "adata" cards, it seems Nikon crippled the cameras to make them compatible with some official (expensive) brands only :

That is a list of cards that have been tested, i doubt Nikon has any interest in disabling other brands of SC cards.

From a quick search, it appears that Adata cards have a less than stellar reputation. Lexar cards are not significantly more expensive, i prefer to spend the extra $5 on a better card.

All the list means is that Nikon has tested those cards and they work in the speccified Camera.

I have read that A-Data has issues with many camera's not just Nikon. I have Transcend cards that are not on the approved list and they have worked fine and are very inexpensive.

Basically A-Data is a crappy card in general.

I certainly agree that they are not the best cards on the market, but why the hell do they flawlessly work on the T2i, pc, USB card reader, media player, but NOT on the D5100 ? So I guess I will invest (again) in a heavy duty San-disk card...We really live a consumerism society dont we ?

that list is just cards they have tested to work, they haven't crippled the 5100

i just tested mine and a 1gb no name brand works fine and even a 8gb microSD card in an adaptor worked fine, i would want to use them as there to slow but it reads n writes to them fine

Hi from England
Thanks a lot for your help, I tried the software with both regular and "format size adjustment" but nothing seems to work either... this is very strange, I will go to my store and try a 16G or higher card in front of the seller. I may have a faulty D5100...

One possible problem is that the original firmware release had problems with certain SD cards. Make sure you have updated your firmware.
