I have blown up the size of the comparison photos in Phil's reviews by clicking on the magnifying glass icon. I found that the 5mp pictures are much better than the 4 mp pictures. By "better," I mean the colors are smoother and don't change form red to maroon for example on an obviously red portion of the picture. Will the G3 produce as good a picture as the Minolta Dimage 7i when actually printed?

Why don't you save copies of:

Sorry for the inline images...I meant to do it this way...

I've been trying to do that, and havn't been able to. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but have not been able to download sample photos and then open them with the photo programs I have. Any suggestions?

Try right-clicking on the link then doing a save-as to your desktop. You might give the files names like 'G3' and '7i' so you can keep track of them. I didn't really mean to sound rude...it's just that your question seemed eminently answerable with a little effort on your part...and I bet not that many people here have done the comparison. Anyway...I look forward to reading your analysis of the prints made from the 4MP G3 and the 5MP Minolta 7i. Let us know what you find. Please be sure to tell us what size prints you had made.

Cheers

I didn't print out those samples you posted (thanks) but I did magnify them both up in Photoshop and panned around the images side-by-side.

Frankly I see very little difference in resolution, if any, much of the time. In fact, at times I actually think I see more in the G3 but it must be my eyes playing tricks on me at this hour.

At any rate, I've determined to upgrade soley for 1 more MP or rez sure ain't worth it IMO! :-)

Obviously there's a noticable difference, but what are we comaparing? The S45 and C5050 are not even the same class of camera. If we want to be fair about comparing 4 and 5 MP resolution, we need to compare the 5050 to a G3, no?

I think the comparison between the S45 and C5050 brings up a good discussion point. The quality of the lens, as well as auto focus, flash, etc make up perhaps more in photo quality than simply 4m vs 5m resolution.

This might be possible in theory.

However, in the examples posted the 5050 pictures clearly have more detail than the S45 ones. So, if you are implying that the S45 has better focussing, etc., it certainly didn't overcome the 1 mp difference here.

It's generally accepted that the S45 and the G3 have the same processor, etc., with a different lens, and in Phil's test the S45 and G3 both had the same resolution.

There's another thread going on today that has a direct comparison between the G3 and 5050, and the 5050 wins on detail in that comparison also, but it has more noise and purple fringing.

As others have mentioned, the optics and focusing ability have more to do with quality than the megapixels.

The horizontal resolution of a 4 Mpxl is 2272, and a 5 Mpxl is 2560. All other things being equal, if printing at 10 inches, the 4 Mpxl would provide 227 dpi, and the 5 Mpxl 256 dpi, a 12% increase that most would need a strong magnifying glass to see. Personally, I wouldn't invest in an upgrade for that. Put the $$$ you save into more flash memory, batteries, an external flash, better tripod, etc.

I think this has something to do with the brand's technology of rendering the colour and not res. Res gives u more detail.
