I only use then for glamor, in a very limited number of situations where I want a flattened image, halo shadows, and rings in eyes.

Can't picture wanting that in macro, so I typically use two diffused flashes on a "butterfly bracket", with the main up around 1:00 or 2:00 (or 10:00 or 11:00), and the fill on the opposite side lower, 9:00 for a 2:00 main, 3:00 for the 10:00 main.

Texture: if you've got it, flaunt it!

There is a way around it, that I've seen done with medical ring lights. Get some polarizing film, cut a circle out the size of the ring light, cut a hole in the center the size of the hole in the center of the ring light, and tape or Velcro it in place. Then get a circular polarizer for your macro lens, and adjust the angle until the reflection goes away.
