The Missing Primes

You forgot the DFA 100 f2.8 and the DA40 f2.4

I agree with a previous post the the biggest gap is in the 135 - 150mm range, and also maybe something like a 28mm.

Doug
Working backwards.

135 format > APS-C > Current Pentax primes that are close
12 > 8
14 > 9
18 > 12
24 > 16 > DA 15 f4
35 > 23 > DA 21mm f3.2
42 > 28
50 > 33 > DA 35mm f2.8 macro, DAL 35mm f2.4, FA 31mm f1.8
70 > 47 > DFA 50mm f2.8, FA 43mm f1.9, FA 50mm f1.4
85 > 57 > DA 55mm f1.4
90 > 60
105 > 70 > DA 70mm f2.4, FA 77mm f1.8
135 > 90
200 > 133
300 > 200 > DA * 200mm f2.8
500 > 333 > DA * 300mm f4
600 > 400

Thank you

Barry Fitzgerald.......

The question of gaps refers to focal length not lens speed.

I'm working backward from 135 format and assume the focal lengths there, should be the ones carried over to APS-C. I don't think anyone used a 60mm or 150mm prime on 135, so I don't see a need to include the DA 40mm or DFA 100mm just because they exist. The point of the thread after all, was to determine what is missing.

In general, maybe not specifically to this thread though, I think it is both focal length and lens aperture . I also think there is a third component, price/cost that also produce a gap in the lens line ups.

There will be gaps no matter what, I do however have preferences for the gaps to be filled over others. I assume other people do as well. Probably not the same gaps as mine thought. ;-)

Thank you

Since no 35mm digital has reared it's head at Pentax as of yet, we have to assume we are talking about our APS-C needs?

If so, I'd say a couple of sure 'bets' as far as being able to pay for themselves with actual sales include:

1. A fast 24-28mm (36-43mm equivalent). I think a market exists for this lens as a DA* - perhaps a re-build of the FA*24/f2.0.

2. A new 135-180mm f2.8 - no macro; optimized for focus speed and AF-C. Could be limited, but a reasonably built DA regular would be attractive (in a metal skin similar to the DA14 maybe).

3. The DA*400/4 or 4.5 this forum has been craving for nearly a decade.

-Andy
I think there are two.

One at around 12mm (18mm on 35mm) and a second somewhere between 266mm and 300mm (400/450mm on 35mm).

What do you think ?

Actually Pentax did make an 150mm lens (K & M series), and although there was not a 60mm, the 55mm used to be common. Close.

Approaching from your logic the DFA 100 should come close to filling the 135 > 90 length that you list. For me 90 vs 100 is close enough.

I was looking at the "gap" is in focal lengths that exists now and not what was produced in the past vs now. Currently you can get a DFA 100 or DA* 200 lens but nothing in between. For me a DA 135 Ltd/WR would be a nice bridge. Similarly there is a gap between the DA 21 and FA 31 / DA 35. Not as big a gap but still there.

Cheers,

Doug

Yes there are several gaps. I would think zoom lenses basically killed the low end prime lens market. For high end prime lenses they need to be either small/compact like the
Limited lenses or faster than the high end zooms.

A high end WR fast normal lens is needed. Something like DA*29/1.4 for 43mm equivelent focal length. Then a DA*24/2.0 for a35mm equivelent fcal length. Then something longer than 300, maybe a DA*500/5.6.

Then several more primes would be nice like a 12 and a 135. Just re-releasing the FA* lenses as DFA* lenses would be great.

Hopefully under Rich ownership Pentax will finally start releasing new lenses.

Can't agree with the 2 gaps the OP has mentioned. I think we still need a 400mm and something around 24-28mm.

Also a DA90 limited maybe would fill the olde 135mm lens gap.

Finally a 200mm macro :-)

What I'd like to see:

13mm f/1.8 ... $450 new
16mm f/1.3 ... $650 new
24mm f/1.3 ... $350 new
35mm f/1.2 ... $199 new

Is that too much to ask?

(hint: No. Those are the FOV/DOF equivalents of a 20mm f/2.8, 24mm f/2, 35mm f/2, and 50mm f/1.7 - on FF .)

Well, since he's never owned ANY Pentax prime lens ... you can understand how he flubbed that one. :)

-A
Didn't mess up anything it's impossible to talk about focal lengths and not talk about lens speed it's extremely relevant.

You are correct I've never owned any, but that has more to do with very few appealed to me, and those that are fast are too expensive for my tastes.

What a lot of people wanted was a cheap 50 f1.8 like Canon and Nikon offer. The Pentax equivalent F/FA50 f1.7 cost nearly as much to make as the f1.4 design but didn't make much profit so was dropped years ago.
Really? So I guess Canon, Nikon and Sony make a loss on their 50mm f1.8's then?
Or maybe not..

These are simple lenses to design and make and essential to the mount to pull users in. This is one reason Pentax have not done very well on this front

LOL!
That would be nice...
All DA* of course!

Don't forget my DA* 500 f/5.6!

(My offer to exchange my wife's car for a 600 f/4 is still valid.)
