photography sites around Houston?

There are some good spots around Houston.

The Williams tower and Wall of water are a favorite, day and night shot photo ops. at Hwy 59 and the 610 loop in the Galeria area. The galeria area has some nice x-mas lights up right now

Downtown from afar can give some good shots, also there are some interesting areas and art work through out downton, but there is lots of construction going on down there

Near the Worthan center in downtown has a few nice structures and along the bayou in down town houston is good.

There is Minute made park on the east side of downtown, and Reliant stadium on the the 610 south loop right next to the astro dome.

The Kemah Board walk is a good place its about an hour and 1/2 south of houston. Also while down that way you can visit Space center houston.

The houston Zoo is not that good, but you can get a few good shots there.

Moody gardens down in Galveston is pretty nice, its about 75 miles from Houston depending where you drive from. There is also a flight museum next to moody gardens.

I am going to be visiting Houston in about three weeks and am
looking for a recommendation on some "must see" sites in or within
a reasonable drive (1- 2 hrs.) of the Houston area that would be
good for taking some memorable photos.

Janders, also you may want to check out Old Town Spring on the north side, up I45 to FM 2920 (Spring Cypress) and take a right and you will run righ into it, its mainly old homes that have been converted in to gift shops and such. It gets pretty crowded on the weekends with all the shoppers.
it gives you a real warm old town feel.
its not that big and you can walk it fairly easy

Thanks for all the great input! I am planning my photo ops already. I have limited time there so this is going to be a big help in keeping me from wasting time driving around looking for something interesting. This is actually a business trip that I intentionally built a little fat in to the schedule to get around the area and take some photos.

I enjoyed your gallery of Houston shots also. Where was that nightime fountain shot taken?

Before going out the Brazos Bend I would suggest calling them at 979-553-5101 , to make sure they are open. It has restricted access hours due to hunting season.

There is an observatory there and just about every saturday night is a star party.

James
Also couple other interesting sites:
George Ranch
Brazos Bend state park
Rice university
Japanese garden (near museum of natural science)

75 miles to Moody Gardens?! if you're starting in Conroe, maybe. more like 45. Moody Gardens is in Galveston which also offers many treelined streets of old houses -- very nice. don't plan on many seaside shots though -- the seaside is particularly uninteresting in most parts of Galveston.

this does bring up a good point though, Houston is very spread out. choose your route carefully or you will end up driving aimlessly through many miles of VERY uninteresting suburbs.

i have to defend the Houston Zoo - its a bit above average for zoos in the states. if you come from a town like San Diego, you won't be impressed. otherwise, there's some good shots to be had. start with the tigers. move to the wolves. but i do agree there are more unique shots to be had around town.

if you want unique non-architecture shots the best place, bar none, is Brazos Bend. its an hour southwest of Houston. there you take scenic walks along the alligator infested swamp. you can take shots of many different types of birds (none migrating at this time of year that i'm aware of). and you can snap alligators from as close as your little brass balls allow. this is Texas, buddy -- there ain't no liberal do-good'er standing around waiting to tell you to move back for your safety! ;) ...dav

If you make it down to Galveston, don't foget The Strand. There is a weekends worth of photo ops within blocks. Here are a few can't miss not in any particular order all in The Strand area all within walking distance.
1. Old archetcture restored, very nice. Just blocks away you have

2. Docks with shrimp boats. Pick up a shrimp po-boy (yummy!) at Hill's. While your at it go to the different levels of the resteraunt and look out the windows and balconies. You will be right on top of the boats. One of the best shots I have ever taken was there years ago.

3. Cargo ships. Sometimes docked close enough to literally touch them. The Port of Galveston is in the background with giant loading cranes.

4. The Elyssa. This is a restored tall ship. If you are lucky it will be docked. It is usually is, but is sometimes out. For a fee you can get on board and tour the ship.

5. The railroad station. At the end of Strand Street is an old rail station that has some interesting statues. In the back they have some old rail cars.

6. Air museum. I haven't been to this, but it's close to The Strand and should have some interesting subjects. Might have to actually get in your care for this one.

There's a lot more to Galveston, but if you can't find photo ops there, well...man, I gotta get down there with my 717. I'm in Dallas now and Galveston is one of the things I miss about living in the Houston area for 35 years. Have fun!

I was refering to No. 41 specifically. I am also interested in the No. 24. also, they both look like they would be great sites.

Now if I my polarizing filter arrives by the time of my trip, I'll be in hog heaven.
Your welcome....

fountains in there, and I dont want to send oyu to the wrong one

Ok the one in # 41 is right off of HWY 59 South, exit hilcroft and make a right turn at the Hilton and its back not too far. I live pretty close to this fountain.

The have changed the lighting for x-mas, and they shut it off sometime after 9 PM or 10 PM

The other one in # 24 is the Willimas Wall of Water. Its Right below the williams tower which is located in the Galerial area of Hwy 59 and loop 610. You cant miss this building..its the tallest thing there. And can be seen from just about anywhere in Houston.

If you are on 610 in the Galeria area going north, exit Westheimer and make the u-turn and follow the service road around until it curves and then you will be right there, carefull on the parking near there..lots of tow away zones
