Thom Hogans 'Complete Guide to Fuji S2' Available!

I sent this message to Thom a few minutes ago...just wondered if anyone else has had problems loading the .pdf file?

Thom,

Hello, just received my copy of the "Complete Guide to the Fuji FinePix Pro S2".

I'm having problems opening the file. In Acrobat 5 I get the error message: "There was an error opening this document: a file read error has occurred".

I tried to copy the file to my hard drive and it gives the following error: "Error coping file or folder. Cannot copy S2GUIDE: Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)"

I tried to copy and paste to my hard drive and I get the following error: "Cannot copy S2GUIDE: Invalid MS-DOS Function"

I tried installing an older version of Acrobat (4) and it gave the same error message.

Any ideas?

Thanks for any help,
I'll keep fiddling.

Thought I would pass on word. Thoms new book The complete Guide to
the Fuji S2 is now available for order. He says it will not ship
until the 8th but you can get your orders in now....

I was all set to order.. But reading over the Table of Contents I
am not so sure any more that I "need" the book... Although I
greatly respect Thom, his photography and vast knowledge... I do
find the price a bit steap.. Just my humble opinion (I am a cheap
bugger by nature)...

Anyways.. I will most likely click the button in a few minutes..
But first I thought I should share with all of you :-)

Hi Leah,

Since you're getting the error when trying to copy the file to the HD, this makes me think there is a problem either with your CD-Rom reader or with the disk (mostly with the disk). Try copying anything else to the HD from another CD and if that works, I think you should call Fuji for a replacement of your disk.

I agree with Dioni......sounds like a faulty disc. Frustrating!
Actually, it's a faulty security certificate (the certificate is keeping you from opening it on any system other than the one it was created on!). As best I can tell, it occurred on 16 orders that went out on a very specific day. I've already sent replacement discs to those affected.

My apologies. The copiers are running at full capacity here with the Christmas rush...

I think you would be an ass if you have the book coming for free and you were so impatient and throw away $29.99 plus shipping?
not to be an ass, but you buy a camera for + - US $2400 and find US
$29.95 a bit steep for a good book?:)

Can the security certificate prevent it also for being copied to the HD?

Not if I get it correct ; ) Technically, you'd be violating copyright to do that. However, I'm not interested in preventing an individual user doing what they need to make the book most accessible to them.

But since at least one of my books is being mass duplicated without my permission in Asia, I have taken steps to ensure that I can prove that the work was authored on my system.

Thom,

Have you thought about contracting with an e-printer for those that want hard-copies? I'd pay extra to get a hard copy of your books, and NOT having a hard-copy has prevented me from buying your books for now. (I like to carry tech books around with me, and read them when I have a moment. Laptops aren't that portable)

I bought a friend's e-book. I was directed to a web-site where I could order it. The printer prints single copies on demand, binds them, and mails them out, all for a very reasonable cost.

I no longer remember the name of the publisher. I've asked my friend for information, and will pass it on to you if you are interested.

I've considered it. But frankly, the quality of the print-on-demand services I've seen isn't particularly good for images, and the economics of it just simply don't make it practical to do for small niche publications.

If you want a hard copy of my book, print it on your printer and have it bound at Kinko's (a permission I explicitly grant to book purchasers). You'll get better image quality than you'd get out of the print-on-demand folks.

I'm not gonna get it unlawfully. I'm related to IT business, but not specially to SW protection SW, and was just curious to know if avoiding copying the file to the HD was a feature of it.

Too bad to hear about your copied book. It is something that is happening more and more everyday, mostly, from what I heard, in Asia and Eastern Europe.

The question for pros: have you had problems with piracy of your pictures? I do not mean just the tipical customer who makes some copies of it, which is of course copyright infrigement. I mean more, if you have found any of your pictures printed and sold ilegally, as it is happening with SW, Music CDs, DVDs, Books, etc.

Best,
Dioni
