New UZi has 73 firmware

Found several C-2100s at Walmarts across the country. Got it for $300 but it's listed at $389.

UZi #1 has the rev77 firmware. The new one is rev73. What does the newer firmware fix? Wondering if it's worth finding an "issue" that needs repaired so I can be upgraded to the newest rev.

From what I recall, and someone jump in here if I'm mistaken, fw 73 was/is subject to sds (sudden death syndrome). That doesn't mean it's inevitable, just that the uzi's with that particular firmware seemed to die a sudden death more than most.

I got a refurbished C-2100UZ from Abes of Maine 4 months ago with a 73 firmware. I have not used it a lot so I don't know if I will experience the SDS, I hope not. I got the Mack Warranty though for 5 years. I would like a backup camera, could you please give me the Walmart info so I can order one?

How do you find out what version of the firmware your 2100 has in it?

Use Notepad. (Start> Programs> Accessories> Notepad), then do a:

File> Open> Directory where your pictures are, then at the bottom choose File Types as All Files. Double click any pictures that you shot with your Olympus camera, about a third of the first line to the right, you will see this:

OLYMPUS OPTICAL CO.,LTD C2100UZ H H v352u-73
-73 is the version.

I've been thinking that there MUST be a stray UZi or two laying around some out of the way Walmart stores. Then during Thanksgiving, my mom said her (rinky dink) WM had one on display for $300. Told her to speak up now if she wanted it, if not, I would buy it. She bought it. So there ARE some out there. I called the home office and finally reached Shannon (479.277.9278). She is the assistant to the camera buyer for WM. She was able to give us (the little digicam list I'm on) a list of stores that showed they still had an inventory of them. If she lists the NM store, don't bother. All five of those have been transfered to local WMs for people to pick up. Good luck. Between my friends, mom and I, we've bought 8 this week. My Uzi was a "73" It had severe lock-up & card corruption probs.... I went a whole year SMPreping my cards to work around the semi-frequent lock-up/corruption issues. I'm of the opinion that "77" & The newest "78" which I now have since it was sent in several months ago are worthy to have. Seems to me "78" was the only thing attributable to my Uzi no longer locking up, IMO. All other repairs were cosmetic or mechanical requiring new parts... Haven't had so much as a cough since. I still to this day run my camera down till the batteries are fully dead in hopes of bringing on the dreaded SDS while my camera is still under warranty. While I wouldn't send it in soley for the firmware. I would give it heavy usage to test & see if anything comes up & would ask for the "78" along with any other repairs that might be needed. Supposedly the red & purples come out better with the newer firmware also. From what I've noticed, that, as well as very slightly better WB & maybe even less CA seems to have been happening.... Could be my imagination though too but I've been pleasantly suprised a few times in the past few months expecting CA in CA prone shots & then not having any when I get em on my puter, with B-300/C-210 & without.... I have read where the "77" while also improving the Red & purples doesn't have the slightly blue cast some seem to have noticed with "78"... Maybe that's what makes me think the WB is better.... LOL... But I can't actually say I've noticed the cooler cast being considerable.... However it is more similar to me e100rs now....

My local Walmart (Cheektowaga, NY/1.716.896.3669) has a display model but won't go lower than $350.
