Are D700 users interested in the rumored D800?

When the D3s came out I remember reading an interview with one of the Nikon execs where he almost appologized that they might have focused a bit too much on the ISO performance and with the next camera they would have a better balance on MP vs high iso.

I also think that it's reasonable for Nikon users to have been somewhat frustrated that until very recently the only high resolution option was the top of the line (and priced accordingly) D3x while Canon and for that matter Sony had decent options for less than half that cost.

That said, Canon users interested in a sports camera had a similar argument against Canon, needing to buy the 1D mk4 while Nikon users had the much more affordable D700.

For the sake of this thread, assume that the rumors of 36mp and 4fps are accurate and that high iso performance is no better than the D700 -- maybe even a smidge less.

1) are D700 users excited about the D800 as an upgrade or do you view it as fitting a different need/niche?

2) It seems as though Nikon is following Canon's lead lining the D800 up directly against the 5D and (probably) the D4 directly against the 1DX. Assuming that there isn't another model yet to appear, is it smart to go head to head like that vs the D700 vs 5D where each company focused on somewhat different strengths. In partial support of that question, anyone know how the sales volume has compared over the last couple years between the two?

If rumors hold true, seems to be a different camera target/purpose than the D-700, but not saying that is all bad....yet. I' going to buy a new camera next year for a big planned trip to Tanzania ....

Just don't know which camera yet to go with my D-700. A DX D-700 (D-400) for reach would work - sure :-)

Possibly, but seeing as it has the same pixel density as the D7000, it might actually be just as good as the D700.

If high ISO is as good as the D700, then I look at the D800 as an upgrade as it gives options .

No one has even suggested that they may keep the D700 production going, maybe with a mild technological facelift - D700s?

I got my D700 so that I could continue to take photos while waiting for the long rumoured D800 to come out.

I will now sell it while the second hand price is still high and use the money towards the D800 when it finally come out.

In the meantime I will now continue to take photos with my D300 so I'm not missing out on anything before anyone says that I should be out taking photos

Not me. I want high ISO capability. I don't need megapixels, though it might help make my 300F4 work better for birding.

I bought my D700 because I couldn't afford a D3s. I'd be more interested in a D4 than a D800, except I still won't be able to afford one.

I'm afraid that the D700 and the D3s won't be made anymore, and the high ISO choice of tomorrow will be prohibitively expensive.

You misunderstood.

As D700 user since july 2008 and D7000 user since feb-March this year:

TMHO D700 was a near to perfect camera with only one thing that bothered me very much: The terrible loud and harsch shutter noise and mirror slap.

I hope D800 will be at least as quiet as D7000 with it's very good LV and silent mode, but I would like it even much more quiet.

Further more I hope D800 will have different RAW file sizes for different applications and I would even welcome a very small RAW size (4-5Mp) while shooting in DX mode.

I ordered my D700 successor several months ago.

For the last 3,5 years I have been claiming that the D700 does everything I ever wanted my camera to do. I guess its time I put these words to the test - NO, the D800, as rumoured mind you! , does not provide any advantages over the D700 for me. Even less my D3s of course.

What puzzles me is the inference that a new camera from Nikon to replace the D700 will somehow make all the D700's in the world underperform and D700 owners dissatisfied.

Not true - and since the D800 doesn't exist, until it does and gets designated to a specific forum, shouldn't it be fantasised about in the general Nikon Talk forum?

Was?

Then it looks like the D800 will be the camera for you. We can find out the 'high ISO capability' by looking at the DxO results and correcting for the extra sensor area. So, to find out what the D800 will do at, say 14085 ISO we look at 14085/2.25 or 6260 and find 21.5 or so dB SNR, compared with the D700's 18.7.

Please explain me where you got the information that D800 doesn't exist.

To my understanding several D800's are being tested and probably even reviewed right now... :)

I think the boot is on the other foot. This is not some kind of philosophical paradox so you please show me where it does exist. (not including rumour-forums and speculation.)

Anyway this forum is currently for D3-D1 / D700 and until/if/when the D800 is launched, officially exists and it's name appears in the forum heading it doesn't belong here.

;)

Yes I am !
