XZ-1 Tips & Tricks

XZ1 is the first "Olympus" digital camera that I have owned. I am a huge fan of the legendary "TRIP 35", which I still use from time to time. I owned canon powershot s3IS and S5IS. I have also tried nikon entry level cameras. And to my surprise, all of these cameras did not have this problem. Olympus should add this feature when they come up with XZ1 replacement. I think I will have to buy a shutter release cable or a wireless remote shutter to solve this problem.

Good tip.

Thanks
Another well-known trick but for the newbies:

The XZ-1 doesn't have an external ISO button. However, if you're using aperture (A) or shutter speed (S) mode, simply turn the mode dial to 'P' (program), adjust the ISO using the front lens ring, and then turn the mode dial back. After practicing a couple times it's hardly slower than having a dedicated external ISO button.

For that, you pay the steep price of having to extend the lens just to review photos when camera is off.
  • To avoid switching on the camera when accidentally knocking the playback button disable the 'power on [via playback button]' option.
I learned this trick from the Panny LX5 crowd: to view your pics w/o extending the lens (or even having to take off the lens cap) hold down the green arrow preview button while simultaneously powering on the camera.

Hello, I noticed that when using the camera in timer mode (2 sec or 12 sec), after a single click the timer is automatically turned off. I tried to save it to custom mode but it doesn't work. Its quite frustrating when you have to go to the menu and set it again and again....

I frequently use the 2sec timer when exposure is long & the camera is mounted on a tripod. This way there is no shake; whatsoever.

Has anyone faced this problem? Does anyone know the solution?
I tried this and the timer saves to the custom setting but it disappears after the first shot. However, if you do a quick turn of the mode dial, say, into manual mode and then back into C mode, the 12s timer is back! Still not the best but quicker than going through the menu system. I actually wish there were mulitple C modes as I would liek to save a couple od settings to avoid having to keep going into the menus.

I wondered the same thing!! Thanks!
I will start: When viewing your photos on the XZ-1 you can rotate the images by rotating the lens collar for setting the aperture.

I kept wondering how my photos were getting turned!

Hmm, which one do you mean? My 'playback' button is blueish, and holding that one while turning on the camera does not help. Am I missing a button?

Is there anywhere I can read up in a bit more detail on the Scene Modes. I know it tells you on the screen what they are basically for but sometimes I need a mode for something which is not described and do not know which one to use.

The Manual is useless.

Wow I started this thread a few years ago with little response. Funny to see it pop up again now.

Pippy100 you may need to just get a photography book. If you tell me what your wanting to do, I can help, but learning the settings for various conditions is what photography is all about. If you can't figure it, try iAuto mode.
