I was just about to buy the X10, and then the WDS issue came up, and that brought things to a screeching halt. I've been stuck on this forum for the past week sucking up every bit of information on the issue. I've watch the reactions go from shock to denial to acceptance. Personally, it was an issue that was a deal breaker, progressing to rationalization, and realistic expectations. There's no doubt in my mind that the issue exists and can be dismaying, but I have also seen the other great images possible from this camera, and the excitement generated by this cam is more than the usual. I have not seen so many picture people so enamored by a camera in a while. Additionally, I just sold my Canon EF IS zoom, and have $860 burning a hole in my pocket. Is there a fix coming? I don't know. And I apologize to those who would feel that my holding off would encourage Fuji to quickly come up with a solution, but it's my birthday, and I made my peace with the issue.

Though I haven't had many problems WDS-wise, I understand your reluctance. For me, though, it's the most fun I've had with a digital camera since the Digilux 2... and that's saying something!

Richyaado:

Lots of similarities to the Digilux 2. The pictures from that camera always had a special something. When I look through the travel slideshows I shot with my D2, they really stand out. One of the few things I didn't like about the D2 was its size--just a bit too big for "always carry", even on trips. I haven't done extensive shoots with the X10 yet, but I think it is going to be a favorite. Quick handling, manual zoom, OVF, nice bright lens, good WB, excellent color and DR. It ticks all the important boxes on my travel camera checklist.

The aesthetics are pleasing, too, much like the Leica.

Happy Birthday.

May your experience with your x10 be as rewarding as it has been for myself. Enjoy.

Whilst the WDS is an issue it only becomes an issue in so far as to how deep you want to pixel peep.
I have it bad on my X10 but it's only bad when I zoom in and notice the blobs.
Viewed at normal and the issue is well.... not so much an issue ;-)

Sorry to all the X10 fans, but...

WDS is real (at least on cameras like mine). It is non-standard at a minimum, i.e. avoiding exposures at 100 ISO on a sunny day is NOT a solution. I have seen the disks, although less offensive, in the simplest of photographic situations. They are very un-natural in appearance.

I do not trust the camera to reliably take good photographs under the range of conditions that I would like to use the camera. Specifically, I think this camera has a good chance or giving me ORBS during sunny days, outside with automobiles as well as on a tripod taking photos at night.

Fuji will fix it, or they will not. If they fix it great. I bought probably the best compact camera available. If they don't, then I bought a camera curiosity because I can't take the thing anywhere for fear of WDS.

My advise is to wait for a fix or the X20. I will give Fuji a couple of weeks and if there is no fix I will probably try and sell my X10. The longer Fuji takes to fix the problem or the longer it takes Fuji to publicly acknowledge the problem, the more likely I will be left with a lemon.

Burn, baby, burn.

It's like going to the store and purchasing your favorite loaf of mashed bread. It's flawed, and you can purchase a different brand of bread - or you could make your own - or you could simply do without the bread until an improved shipment arrives, but ya just gotta have that loaf of bread before someone else jerks it off the shelf.

While there is hope that Fuji will address the issue, they failed to do such with many issues of prior cameras.

But, it's your dough - your choice in the end. You'll have to go with your personal logic.

Happy Birthday ddtan! :-) I too hope you enjoy your new x10 as much as i am enjoying mine. Kindest regards.

The best thing for everyone would be to stop buying the camera. This would focus all the tiny minds in Fuji and help the existing owners. If Fuji keep selling the camera the issues will likely not be corrected or even acknowledged.

I am thinking of just buying a fast compact to replace my interchangeable lens camera and the Olympus XZ-1 which with an additional excellent EVF all in at £436 seems a better bet than a X10 at the moment at £465 considering the anguish on this forum. I do hope for all your sakes this issue can be corrected. I waited until the P7100 came out before I bought one as the P7000 seemed a similar situation of a camera rushed on to the market with known bugs. Potentially this is a great camera so it seems so cruel that these paranormal intrusions occur in some of the shots.

This is exactly how I feel about it, couldn't have expressed myself better. I have an Olympus E3 with 12-60 SWD which I really like to use. This X10 is the first little cam which, directly from the beginning, seemed to me the perfect tool next to my E3, but then came these stupid ORBS. At first I thought it was just another thing of pixel-peepers but the more examples I saw the more I had to admit it does spoil the quality of the image as a whole. I still would like very much to buy this camera, saved some money for something like this, but nevertheless I have decided to wait for what Fuji is going to do. It's very contradictory because I see so many superb pictures of this camera, IQ is beautiful, colors are great, everything else is just perfect. And yet it feels not good to buy an expensiive, new tool, knowing that one little, but very eye-catching thing is simply not right. Fuji, DO something about it!! :-)

I bought the X10 before the WDS issue came up, but don't regret it (this is the first Fuji I've owned). Again, I understand the reluctance of those who might have been considering a purchase, but have held off. It's in Fuji's best interest to address this, and I expect they will. Whatever happens, I don't think the Fuji folks have "tiny minds." The new sensor technology they've created is really very clever.

That's what I did -- didn't even open it, just refused delivery. Now I'm waiting. White dots don't do it for me.

Happy birthday.

I am also considering whether to keep or return my X10. Except for that one problem,The so-called orbs, I have not had so much pleasure in using a camera since I bought my first Leica.

Perhaps I've been lucky. While I have experienced the so called orbs, I have never experienced the giant orbs that have been shown in this forum. I've tried to produce the giant orbs. I photographed specular highlights in water, sunlight reflections from auto chrome and paint, a mini flashlight beam in a dark room, but although I did find orbs, they were small and they were manageable in post processing using Lightroom. Perhaps there is variation between individual X10's.

It’s the blokes birthday for heaven sake, sure some of you don’t like the x10 camera and that’s fine - but to use this birthday thread as a means of propagating your already well aired grievance is a little over the top to put it mildly.

On this one occasion it might have been better to wish him the best with it, rather than pour scorn on his informed choice because it didn’t match your own. Very disappointing chaps – to say the least.

Like I said, it was a personal decision. In fact, for those that are holding off, good for you, I hope you do provide some motivation for a fix.

2 little thoughts that entered my mind regarding waiting. First, was, what if there is shortage due to christmas, and decreased production. Second, and something probably no one can know, what if the fix changes the characteristics of this camera adversely. Not saying that it will, but who knows?

That leaves you in a very bad spot, or at least it would be a problem for me. How do you sell a camera knowing that it doesn't work properly? Do you tell the buyer about it and take a huge loss or just smile and say nothing and stick someone else with the problem? I know I'd have a hard time passing on my bad luck to someone else.

You are right. Happy birthday!

WOW, the orb issue seems to be taking on a life of its own on this forum. From what I read there should be some fairly good deals on X10's out there fairly soon. Anyone interested in getting rid of theirs at a discount price contact me off list as I am looking for a used one.

FWIW, here is a shot taken with a Pentax DSLR I took the other evening when we got 5 inches of snow, and it clearly shows one large orb and multiple tiny orbs in the snow.

No remorse. My birthday gift to him was a piece of helpful advice. As he subsequently said, to each his own. And "scorn" is your interpretation, not my intention at all.
