What a complex update procedure !

If you followed the procedure set by the software, you won't lose your settings. I didn't. Both procedures are okay with Sony. If you don't want to initialize, don't.

Their website gives one procedure; the software installation process gives another.

Sorry, but you are propagating baloney. Just read the procedures - carefully. If 1.04 is implemented logically one should initialize. As I said in a post above, if one follows the entire instructions through in sequence, downloading the software instructions only appears in the European instructions as Step 2 i.e. after Step 1, which is initialization. In the Asia Pacific instructions, initialization is Step 3 which is obviously before Step 5, connecting the camera to the computer. I assume US instructions are similar, but if not, my apologies.

That said, no-one knows whether failure to carry out initialization has or does not have any effect on the implementation of the upgrade.

I remember last year, buying a mid-range camcorder for the kids. A Sony.

Guess what, IT NEEDED TO "PREPARE" ITS SD CARD FOR LIKE 2 MINUTES, BEFORE IT COULD EVEN USE IT!

It was something that felt like one was thrown back into the 80s when you needed to format things before storing data.

As the rest of the user experience was of the same inferior level, I promptly returned the thing.

Clearly Sony have great technical know how (they make the lion's share of imaging sensors in the world, etc) - but they sure could use some user input and user testing, rather than let the engineers drive it all.

It should be. Once you get the exe(app) file on the card, the camera should recognize it. If I had one, I would do it. But I'm still on the fence with this camera.
