First group shot. What do you think?

Hows the lighting etc..

Roliaz replied:

The lighting is fine, though I find the pose too symetrical, causing the eye to wander between the back row and the seated people.

Also, consider cropping closer to the heads of the standing people, eliminating some of the distracting alcove and lamp, which then can be "burnt in" with Photoshop to de-emphasize the background.

Funny thing about backgrounds, I was talking to some people I just shot photos of, they were commenting on the cropping of some photos, about how I cut out the fireplace background, how they wish they would hav put more stuff in it, like presents behind them, how they wanted more of it, then I come here and everyone is always talking about cropping out the background, crop closer to the heads, get rrid of such and such, but when I talk to people that are getting photos done, some want some stuff in the background, they want not only memories of them, but of the surroundings around them, the "I remember this house" feeling. I like the way this photo looks alot, I like the background the way it is. Question is, do they all like the photo? Did any of them say they did not like it? I understand we all want to take better photos and learn what we could have done differently, I am doing it all the time, but I think you did great here. In the end, it is the client, will they purchase it? If you can sell it, they like it, what more could we want.

Good Job!!!

Roliaz replied:

I would agree with what you are saying... but, only if more of the foreground was brought into play, by using a longer shot. The lamp "poised" over the blonde ladies' head is quit distracting, as is the hollow cavernous look of the alcove.
