Can I copy Canon EOS 50D photos to iPhone 4S?

Would be nice if I could copy photos from my EOS 50D (or 40D or 7D) to my iPhone 4S. Advantage would be that, in the field, without a laptop, I could post images to Facebook etc. that I shoot with my Canon DSLR. Is this possible?

I hooked the two together with cables (Mini-USB on Canon to iPhone connector in Iphone). It said something like "Device Not Supported". Is this possible?

My buddy says he has a Nikon and he can connect his Nikon to his iPad. So, I dunno. Is this possible? Or am I going to have to write an app to do this?

Did you use the Apple camera kit and then connect your camera? My 60D and 550D use sd cards so I use the sd card adapter of the camera kit. You would have to use the USB adapter of the kit.

I'm an Android guy, but I own an iPad. I'm pretty sure that you can import photos onto the iphone using iTunes.

I don't know how to do this but I'll research this. I just got the iPhone 4S. I'm having my 13 year old daughter get me up to speed (slowly).

The Apple Camera Kit does not work with the iPhone as a host (you can connect an iPhone as a camera to an iPad; but that's not what you are asking).

There is nothing on the market that I know of that will do what you want. To transfer photos to the iPhone you need a laptop and iTunes or download them from a web site.

You might be able to use an Eye-Fi card to upload photos from the camera to a web share and then download them to the iPhone from there. You might even be able to use the iPhone personal hotspot to share your internet connection with the Eye-Fi (no idea if this is possible). I imagine the data cost could get quite high though.

Phil,

I suspect that you are right. But why is this the case? The iPhone appears to be a fairly powerful computer. The Canon DSLR cameras show up as drives in Windows Explorer quite easily. Granted, an iPhone is not a Windows box, but it would seem to be a fairly trivial exercise to create an iPhone app that basically emulates Windows for the purpose of extracting data from the camera. Is this something that Apple doesn't allow? Because I'm thinking of writing an app at this point.

Do I assume correctly that the same is true if the camera is a new S100?

Yeah, so this is sort of frustrating. I understand (now) that I can copy the photos into the iPhone using iTunes if the iPhone is connected to a laptop. But this is sort of ridiculous....the phone is a computer...the camera is a computer...there ought to be a way to get the photo from the camera into the phone without a laptop in between. This is 2011, after all, not 1983.

I'm not 100% clear why this is. Right now, the best guess I have is that it's Apple's proprietary lock-down mentality. I'm certain that you could write an app to copy the files from the camera into the iPhone very easily. What I'm not sure is if Apple approves of this and would allow the app to be developed/marketed. My gut instinct is that they're against this for some reason, sort of the way they're dead set against allowing Adobe Flash.

You could try something like the I Trek
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000YZGCIU
or other SD to CF adapter with an EyeFi card.

Direct mode is a relatively new feature that lets the card set up a mini wifi point to point network with a nearby iPhone. Works a treat with my compact, but the CF adapter is a big point of uncertainty. At least as far as range issues, you can put the phone inches away from the card slot on the camera.

And yes it is completely an Apple nerf that the SD-to-dock adapter doesn't work with the phones, just the pad.

Have you looked in to jailbreaking? You might find something on the Cydia website that will allow what you want to do.

Aha. Very interesting product. Wasn't aware of this. Very interesting. But, you are correct. I used CF instead of SD, and this product appears to only be available with SD.

I've not considered jailbreaking the iphone up to this point, as I've not really had any need/desire to so far. But your point is valid. It looks like I'll have to look outside of the despotic arms of Apple for a solution. Had not heard of Cydia. I'll check this out. Many thanks.

So, their website for Eye-Fi says that they don't support the CF to SD adapters. But maybe this will work anyway? I'm sort of fuzzy on this.

I would assume that the Canon Powershot S100 has the same issues as the Canon DSLR's with CF cards. That they won't interface directly to the iPhone for whatever reason (thx Apple).

The S100 uses SD cards.
