Hi, I have recently upgraded to a Canon 60D, but seeme to be having focus issues on certain shots, this one is a prime example. I have set up the camera correctly and focus point is on the red light, however you will see its not in focus. the area to the right of the lights, however is in focus.

Could this be my lens?

Can't seeme to be able to upload the shot (functio to create an album not working at the moment), its the first one on my flicker page:-

Whilst it's possible, it's unlikely there is anything seriously wrong with your camera. It's more likely to be user error ...or rather user unfamiliarity with your new equipment. The focussing marks in the viewfinder don't always line up exactly with where the actual focus sensors are and with a shot like this it's quite possible the camera wasn't focussing quite where you thought it was.

What focussing technique did you use? Did you select the focus point you wanted? I've always found the best results by just using the centre focussing point, - focus, half press the shutter button to fix focus, recompose the image, shoot

I used the the centre focus point while in AF. I can see the focus point over the exact area I wanted (in my RAW software). Do you mean, I could have focused on the background rahter then where I wanted and the re-composed to the right spot.

I suppose this would be answer, especially withe the shallow DoF (3.5)

That would certainly cause the problem. DPP (or whatever program you are using to view the focus point) only shows which focus point was used, not where the focus point was when you locked the focus.

A focus "point" is not really a point - it's an area.

The AF system is locking on to something in that focus area, but it may not be what you think it is.

I think you would get more answers, useful that is, in the Canon 60D Talk forum. There you will find most forum members with the same equipment, and possibly with the same problems.
But the posters who answered you above made perfect sense...
