50D to 7D?

I have a slight variation of this often-posed question: while I need the 7D for video business purposes, I'm curious as to whether I need to upgrade lens(es) first. The budget won't allow both. Current gear:

Canon 50D
Canon 70-200 f/4L
Tamron 17-50 f/2.8
Canon 50 f/1.8
Canon 28-135 (which I will be selling soon either way.)

Thanks!

Seeing your list of lenses I'd say you are fine for the switch. The only concern I'd have is that the Tamron 17-50mm isn't parfocal (the 70-200 f/4L USM IMHO is near parfocal - focused at the long end when zooming out your subject stays in focus) which means that you shouldn't change focal length while recording video with this lens.

Lens wise you're in pretty good shape. But I suggest looking into the 60d as well for video. If I understand it the 60d has a bit more control over things like sound over the 7d's controls. Personally I use a 50d and 7d. But do very little video.

What about the Canon 24-70 L? Honestly, I hadn't thought of the focusing issues you brought up for video. I can sell both the wide zooms and make up the cost difference pretty quickly.

The price of lenses goes up , bodies come down .
There is no choice if you need video .

Really. If you're happy with the lenses on your 50D, they'll be just as good or maybe even better on a 7D. Or a 60D, or a 550D, or a 600D, all of which have video capability and the same or similar sensor to the 7D.

Well, I actually said 50D, not 30D. But I probably would have said the same of the 30D. :)

I've never understood--and never experienced--the phenomenon of a lens working less well on a higher-resolution sensor than on a lower-resolution sensor. For example, I have a 12 MP Canon 450D/Xsi and an 18 MP Canon 7D, and every lens I own produces images that look as good or better on the 7D. It is true that when I put my 70-200 f/2.8L lens on the 7D I was blown away; I'd never known just how good it was. But the images I get from lesser lenses on the 7D are just as good as on the XSi.

...you know something "New" is coming in 2012! Sit-back and wait... watch!

With the competition coming out with game-changing gear lately, Canon will trump it soon, in 2012...
