I recently bought d7000 with 18-200 and looking for decent flash (first flash).

SB-900AF is expensive for now, Is there any other flash around $200 from 3rd party that can be worth using for 1-2 years (this will be first flash so need something simple.
Also any recommendation on tripod will be appreciated.

I bought this one cause it is smallest and is tiltable.

If it is not tiltable it is not worth spending $30 on it, no mater who makes it or what it is.

I was a flash disbeliever, and this has been an epiphany. My indoor pics look awesome with bounce flash!

for me personally, I'd probably be looking at a used, or refurbished SB-600, it'll be in that price range, or perhaps cheaper for a used one.

Tripods, that's a different story to really get the proper results from a tripod you really need a steady base, and not knowing what your price point is at the moment it's kind of hard to recommend anything. I'd say try to spend a little more then what you'd expect on a tripod.

Do a search through the forum as there are a lot of threads already in place for either.

You can get the Nissin Di622 II from B&H for $190.00 + free shipping.

The last time I looked there were issues with FP sync off camera, but other than that it was a pretty decent flash.

Or just save up for the SB-900. Power is one of the most important things for flash.

Here's a great article

I'm pretty much in the same boat, having spent most of my money on the camera, and peripherals (software, tripod, filters) that I'm making due for now with my old SB-28 for the flash I do use, and waiting to get the SB-700. The 900 is probably more flash than I'll ever really need, and if not I'll be happy with the 700 until I can find one used, and pick up another 700 to use off camera.

why wasting money on a flash, that you are going to replace in 2 years ? Make a good choice now, and use the flash for the next 10 years. Get the SB700, or wait for a SB900 replacement, if you need more power.

I've bought the Vanguard Alta Pro 263AT with the SBH-100 ball head. It's cheap and stable, and unlike Manfrotto, you get a carrying bag and a stone bag with it.

I have the SB900 and I know you said it's out of your budget at this stage, but it's a brilliant flash. If you're looking to use a flash as a stepping stone and plan on getting a SB900 in the semi-distant future, you may want to hold off and save up, rather than getting something that doesn't really do the job all that well and you'll have trouble on-selling it.

On the other hand, I've heard very good reports about the Metz 58 (I think it's called). Apparently it does full TTL and is only about half the price of the SB900. I very nearly bought one as a backup but didn't because it only zooms to 105mm not the full 200mm like the SB900. But, for the money, convenience and time frame, it might be the perfect solution for you??

You purchased the brand is is #1 in flash photography, stick with a Nikon flash.

You can pick up a SB400 and chances are you'll never need more unless you're shooting at 100'

I'll chime in. I shoot D700/D7000, own the SB900 and SB600. I probably use the SB600 75% of the time on or with either camera. Its simple, good power, works with CLS, and I've had it for five or six years and still behaves like new. The SB700 would be my choice if I didn't already have the 600.......

I would recommend either a used SB-800 or SB-700. I have 800s and 900s and I use CLS a lot in the studio. BTW, nice camera/lens combo...Brent

...or if you want to bounce off the ceiling when shooting camera in portrait poisition, since the flash won't fire at that angle...

You can always find nice used SB-600's for under $200.

I use 2 of them and have never needed anything stronger... that's just me though.

If the OP wants a new and under $200 "simple" flash, take a look at the Sigma EF 610 DG ST for about $165US street price. Works great as a TTL flash, head swivels both ways, very powerful. That is it. Nothing else. No wireless, no manual power modes worth mentioning.

I've got one, works very well and has held up well. It is not a SB-900, but is isn't intended to be! MUCH MUCH simpler and also much cheaper.

If you want fancier, look at the 610 Super for about $260. It adds wireless and some actually usable manual power controls. I have no personal experience with the "Super".

Hope that helps

Thanks a lot for all the feedback. After reading all the comments and checking on website I see 3 options for flash:
Used SB-600 for $200 on craigslist
or
Sigma EF-610 DG ST
or
Nissin ND622MKII-N (Got good reviews)

Also on tripod SLIK PRO 700DX looks good so wondering if anyone have it or used it but got good reviews on websites.

Now some background on why need to buy these items:

I thought camera and good lens would be good and I am getting greats pics during daytime but I am having 2 issues :

1) Party hall with very limited light and camera just can't work (someone recommended flash for this issue)

2) Skyline during night time and pictures are so blur and useless (someone recommended using tripod, remote and flash for this issue)

Let me know if gear I am buying is not going to fix the issues or I need to buy some other things to fix these 2 issues.

I use a Yongnuo YN467 from ebay under $100 with good results,TTL and manual.

SB400 but has limited tilt, great, small and beats the pants off the built in. Keep a little business card in your pocket for a nice diffusor

SB600 refurbished or used on CL. I had three before selling two for two SB900

SB900 if you need/want all the bells and whistles.

There are the off brand that can shoot manual, but you get what you pay. No question you pay a lot more than you should have to for Nikon but that is the way it goes...

If the OP can stretch his budget a bit I would suggest the SB-800 also. They can be had for around $300. The OP was interested in "simple" as he is just starting. Although there is some study involved in learning the settings, a few of them will take care of most all the work he is likely to do for a while. Craigslist is a good place to start looking.

A used SB-600 is your best bet IMHO. I have personally also used Metz 48 AF-1 and found it to be very good, but I ended up selling it in the end and keeping the SB-600.

Cheers

Incorrect, the SB400 tilts just fine, it just doesn't swivel but it does tilt for bounce off the ceiling
