Hi,

I have an epson 1280(1290) printer. I espon colorlife & matt papers with Epson Ink. The profile are generally OK. I have notice some color issues despite having a well calibrated monitor.

I was think about producing my own profiles, but have seen posting saying that you can't improve on them yourself. Therefore is it worth purchasing some? If so who from?

Hi Alex,

With a 1280 and Epson inks you should be able to use a scanner-based profiling system and a good profile editor. You can have custom profiles made for you for around $100, maybe less, for each profile. Profile City does it. I'm sure there are others. Here are some considerations in regards to having custom profiles made:

1.) The cost. If you're printing on a few different media types you'll pay as much as you would for entry level profiling software.

2.) If your printer drifts or the formula of your inks changes, you'll need to go through the profiling process again and pay for a new profile.

3.) It's generally a one shot deal. If you don't like the quality, you probably won't have any recourse.

I have used profiles linked to Ian Lyons' Computer Darkroom for about a year. They have worked well for me. Downloaded profile and instructions for Color Life paper from Epsons download page.

http://www.rgbnet.co.uk/ilyons/index.htm . Then do a search for Epson 1280 Profiles.
Hope this Helps,
Gary

Hi,

I agree with what your are saying. The question I have thu is will these profiles be better thaan profiles created by epson or others for standard epson inks and paper?

I've found that custom profiles (that I made) for 1280 standard inks and Epson papers work better than Epson canned profiles. As for third party profile reliability, that depends on what software was used to create them - among other things.
