Contemplating purchase of HX100V

Wow, some awesome images!

A couple of questions

1) Is that a per pixel rendition (that is did you simply crop the area around the moon?) I clicked on it twice to get max size and it says 1600 x 1200 -- Im hoping thats not a resize but an actual per pixel crop because it looks awesome :)

2) Did you use any digital zoom? I have an exif program that lets me see all the settings, but I'm not sure whether it shows digital zoom or not.

3) Is the second one in black and white mode? I'm wondering how the sky is completely black and the contrast is much higher. Unless maybe the first was taken close to sunrise?

There had to be some kind of digital zoom applied or you used a teleconverter lens of some sort? If so please let me know which one so I can pick it up-- when I did a tight crop around the edges of the moon I was getting a picture size of something like 1300x1000 pixels!

810mm with a 16 MP camera with a 1/2.3 sensor should be something like 971mm x 971mm according to this site:

I told you...
HX100V does a lot better moon shots
(but it is not a astronomic telescope).

For the price of the camera you cant get better than the Sony hx100 when it comes to a P&S with moon shots.

This is a picture I took back in October.

Right out of the camera. No photo editing of any kind.
I did use a tripod. No other lens used.

I could take this photo into my photo editing and lighten it and unmask it as some photographers do but I wanted you to see it right from the camera. I could have played with the EV on the camera to lighten the picture a bit but but I was in a hurry as the bugs were coming in the open window, This was a spur of the moment hand held shot. I opened the window, pushed out the screen and shot not really thinking of my settings. I do shoot in P mode most of the time and this allows me to adjust the settings if I want to.

Yap.
HX100V is actually the best value P&S camera!
That's one of the best moon shots I've seen here.
Congrats

Oops... typo... in my above post. I Did NOT use a tripod. *

Oh and one other thing. My spouse surprised me a few months ago with a new Canon DSLR, its a great camera and I like it a lot, but I reach for my Sony for most of my shots.

WE love the Sony HX100 so much we got another one in September.

The only negative is the View Finder, its not a great quality so I use the screen.

You wont be sorry if you choose the Sony.

Thanks! Ive decided to get the camera! I have a scope so maybe I could attach it to the scope in some way? I was going to get it from BH photo but I see they charge a hefty 60 dollar tax since I am in NY so any advice for the best place to get it from? And any essential accessories to begin with? I would think an extra battery and an 8 GB card to start with.

BTW Im thinking I could do some wide angle starry night photography with this camera too since in twilight mode I can combine six images! What do you think?

Full digital zoom. No computer cropping -straight off the camera. the blue one was at 18h00 and the other one late at night - still full color. I've tried this multiple timesand it keeps on amazing me.

I have been up higher on my ISO and no grit... Its great.

I think if you were to try Amazon.com, they do not charge tax and some places on there have free shipping.

Get a few extra batteries. I have 4 and 2 chargers. I also have an extra memory card.

I am trying to find the picture of a air plane that was going over the house, I shot it very quickly, not thinking of settings. when you enlarge the pic, you can see the windows and the shades on some of the windows pulled down to block the sun.

You can use the "Precision" zoom feature and double the zoom. You can zoom in on the moon to close it wont all fit on the screen. SO you can zoom in on parts of the moon. I have some of those pics. I will try and find them and show you.

I think you will be happy with the camera.

Thanks, I wanted to get the camera from BH but the sales tax there is $60 so I was looking at other online outlets but this camera always seems to be out of stock-- what's up with that?
