Just got back from a week-long whirlwind road trip to TN. Our holiday work/travel schedule is spoken for, but we allowed ourselves to be pulled, last-minute, southeast across the country by a distraught in-law who wasn't taking no for an answer :)

It was a lot of fun. Excruciating in a way, too - we had to make time, and I saw so many things I would have like to explore... but we had a tight schedule and just couldn't stop to shoot everything. Or even really very much.

We stayed in Chattenooga while there, and St. Louis one night on the way back, and I was able to record a few things:

.
Gas Stop Parking Lot (DA 35ltd, click to expand)

Rose after rain (DA 35)

Color in the Smokey's (DA 35)

TVA (DA 35)

Walk to Arch, Morning (DA 15ltd)

Visitors (15ltd)

From the Top (15ltd)

Barge, Helipad (15ltd)

Waiting for Descent (15td)

One Last Look Up (15ltd)

.

Also while in TN, we visited Lookout Mountain again, sight of a very unique Civil War battle... we were there last year, also, with the 15, but this time up I only had the D700 + 50 1.8D available (battery dead on the K20D, no spare)

Moccasin Bend (50mm at f/8)

8lb Napolean Aimed at the Bend (50mm f/1.8 wide open)

Turkey Vultures off the East Face (50mm @ f/8)

Wow, I love Gas Stop Parking lot. The composition is great, and there is something about the fluffy cloud peeking out behind the cold wall that I love. Great photo.

The rest of the photos are great as well. I would have to say Gas Stop Parking Lot, Rose After Rain, and Walk to Arch are my favorites though.

I'm really liking the look of photos from the DA35ltd. I'm trying to decide between one of those or the DA21ltd and keep getting pulled both ways whenever I see great photos from one or the other.

I always look when you post. "Gas Stop Parking Lot", "Walk to Arch, Morning", "One Last Look Up", "8lb Napolean Aimed at the Bend" (the second one in particular), and the vertigo-inducing views of "From the Top", and "Barge, Helipad", are the ones that gave me a visceral response. Well done.

Great Shooting MC, so you climb stairs to the top of the arch and then look through windows?

No, basically, it's about a three-minute ride in pods that hold about six people each (I haven't been up it myself in probably close to 40 years). The pods are very small and close and completely enclosed, and they rotate slightly evey now and then on the way up and down to keep the occupants verticle. You're riding up in the legs of the Arch, and they're much smaller than you would imagine.

The Arch grounds are about to receive a makeover which should be really nice. They're also trying to figure out what to do about the Arch itself. It has some pretty severe rust in/on parts of it.

It's a lot of fun, really, but when you see it every day, you tend to forget about it. I'll have to take my grandchildren up one of these days. You can ride the Metrolink down there, which makes it a fun trip for kids.

You always have something in a set that grabs me; today it's One Last Look Up. You certainly took advantage of great timing to produce a great image.

This is a fun series for me. It includes a city that's on my short list of places I want to visit (St. Louis) and a city I lived in for four years as a kid (Chattanooga). I always loved the rich historical sites around there, as well as just the sheer beauty... especially Point Park and Chickamauga Battlefield.

These are my two favorites of the set.

Thank you - that cloud just kills me. The angle of the light on the brick brought some defining shadows that caught my eye when I saw the scene from our parked car, and the composition just presented itself. Glad you liked it!

Walk To Arch is very special to me, those three at the bottom there are my fam :)

I must say it was difficult to conceive a 'new' shot of the arch, hopefully I succeeded somewhat.

Good luck! That 21 is attractive in several ways. I used to shoot the M 20 f4 on my K20D, and the allure of a small, very sharp and extremely contrasty and colorful 20mm is not lost on me.

But I have to vote for the 35ltd.

Thanks Dean - no, as Lee described, you go in a little tram car up to the top. There are 8 tram cars on each side of the arch, and they take off on schedules, like every 10 mins. When you're waiting at the bottom, there's a very nice little waiting area in front of your personal car's 'door' (tram car arrives like an elevator, behind that door,) where they show you a video about pioneers and cantilever bridges (which is what inspired the arch.) At the top, though, you have to wait in a dark, stark metal/concrete stairwell for your tram to arrive (seen in Waiting for Descent )

The ride up is very cool - the trams have glass doors, and you can see the interior of the arch, the metal stairwell, the lights, etc. There's even a very old desk + filing cabinet workspace about half way up, stuck on a little grate stairwell landing, dimly lit. I wondered about what it would be like to have that 'office'. :)

Definitely take the grandkids - my boys loved it. My oldest thought the tram car looked exactly like a space capsule. :)

Thanks Joe - you may remember my 15ltd set from point park last year, then. Good to hear from you as always.

My in-laws may be moving away from there soon (TN), so I don't know how many more times I'll get out there. I have to say I'll probably miss it - it's grown on me.

LOL, I was distracted by the question about the Arch trams and forgot that I really wanted to say I love your post-processing on these. It's beautiful and especially appropriate given the historical nature of the areas--like you had brought them from somewhere back in time.

BTW, here's the 'space capsule' when it arrives. Note the " I'm not so sure about this now " expressions :)

The sense of wonderment at the top:
