I got to the lake about 30 minutes after sunrise to take advantage of the light at that time. Here are a few of the shots I got with my K5+DA*300 hand-held.

Great images as usual LPA. The Killdeer is my favorite.

The fighting sequence is very interesting. I've never seen anything like that before. Thanks for showing.

Cheers.

The light is good. And like Ron, I found the Coots fighting to be quite intriguing. I've been a birdwatcher all my life and never had such a great look at a coot's feet!!

Great work LPA love the coots feet. Don't suppose you cropped killdeer this is a shot that would look great dead center with the rings radiating and full reflection.

The 'fighting birds' are great. I could see those winning a contest for their subject matter alone. A video might be even better. Beautiful photo's...

To echo the other replies, fantastic shots all.
The middle shot of the two coots is my favourite of those three.

Great stuff,

Rod

Thanks Ron. I also had never seen coots doing this before, but then I usually ignore them. I had to check with some local Audubon Society people to see if they were fightin' or lovin' :-) They confirmed the coots were fightin'.

Dean,

Thanks. Those feet were new to me as well. Yeah, I had to crop the killdeer on the right that much to get rid of some trash on the shore :-(

Excellent photos!
Do you use any hide / blind? If yes, could you tell me which one you use?
Thanks

Thanks. I didn't use a blind. These were taken at White Rock Lake in Dallas, Tx, which has become an urban oasis of sorts for migrating birds. This is the only place I've been where one can get this close to White Pelicans in the wild. Some pelicans just stop here for a little R&R on their way down to the Texas Gulf coast, but some stay here for the winter. Those that stay hang out in this small cove which is a nice, protected haven for them. They have learned not to be bothered by people because there is still water between us and them. To give you an idea how close they are, the first preening shot was cropped to 4000x3000 pixels before down-sizing for the web. Of course, their white feathers are a challenge to shoot and I always make sure to under-expose somewhat so I can bring out detail and contrast during PP.
