You may have seen some of my previous posts about my next camera. I had a Rebel T2i and sold it to a friend. I was convinced I was going to downsize as I didn't feel I needed a SLR. Well, I settled on a Hx100V this weekend and though it is a nice camera I am just not loving it as it is so much slower than my SLR. So, my question is How does the NEX system stack up against say a Canon Rebel SLR? I like the size factor and all but, is the NEX gonna live up to speed for me? I need to go to a store and try one out I suppose.

Then if I go the NEX route. Is the 5N very capable or should I wait and spend more on the NEX-7?

Thanks in advance for any insight you may offer.

Nobody can tell how you will like the Nex. I find the AF on my Nex 5 is good enough in most situations.
It will not be good for very fast sports, BIF etc.
For most other applications it is more then fast enough.

You can bypass the slower AF with some technics we used in the MF days. This can help when you are not realy in fast sports and BIFs...

I'm waiting to see the new lenses and the review on the Zeiss 24mm before deciding on the 5N or 7.

For me the advantage of the 5N is the tilt EVF.

The 7, has built in EVF & flash (not as powerful as the one that comes with the 5N)

16 or 24 meg is not an issue for me.

Both cameras (and all other cameras) have too many controls. P,A,S & M are all I need.

i think if speed is your priority you're never gonna like a NEX. it's the one negative of this system although for most it's more than bearable. i'd say BIF are the only typo of focussing scenario you'll get frustrated with the nex although the 5N does seem faster than the 3 or 5 at focussing

if you really want a compact system with speed either a nikon J1 or panasonic m43 i'd say.

p.s. im not fanboy of either of those, just being honest. i'm a sony man through and through

good luck :D

This should help ;)

Nex 5N is as capable camera as any dx dslr . EXCEPT speed ( af mostly) and current lens selection. ( in native e mount at least)

If you have money and patience, by all means wait for nex 7. I might be quite a while though... 5N is smaller, half the price , AND has better high iso. 16 mp is plenty unless you shoot for giant posters, but you wouldnt be using nex then ,would you....
Good luck

Wow! thanks gang for your input. I love the size factor and I guess I would get used to anything I buy. The easiest would be to just get a rebel again and move on. I am drawen to newer technology though and the NEX seems cool
Ill post back when I decide.
thanks again
