Hello

I almost bought a G12 yesterday.

I really like the look of the camera, the accessible controls and the fact you can add a flash, even the flip out viewer etc.

More importantly from what I can tell it also takes great pictures.
I am not overally concerned that a camera must fit into my shirt pocket.

I have seen lots of discussions about the S95 v S100 and comparisons between them.

The comparison is an obvious one given one directly replaces the other and are both portable and similar size etc. There is good discussion about the softness v better low light capablilties etc.

However, the G12 does not have a similar direct replacement yet (maybe the G13/14 is in the way but no one seems to know).

So I wondered if people thought the discussion about the S95 v S100 equally applied to the G12?

If I am not worried about the size of the G12 is it still a good camera to buy or would I be making a mistake in light of the S100?

Thanks

I'm sure you will love it. If you want to join the waiting game you could pick up a used G11 for a bargain, but don't be surprised if you fall in love with it too.

You can't go wrong with the G-12. I've had miine for about 8 months and a trip to Europe. There are no complaints on my part. The creative capabiltes and low light abilites are endless.

Thanks.

I think I will get one.

I might wait till the 3rd Nov to see if the G13 is announced..

I compared to G12 to S95 last year and they're very, very close in PQ. The G12 has slightly less CA and purple fringing and overall slightly better lens (but most of the time you may not see even much difference).

Note that the S95 is 1 stop faster so in low-light it's slightly better (at least in theory 1 stop). Some people find S95 too small so I can see that the G12 is easier to operate and has an articulating display.

Just bought the two. Both great but I prefer the G12. My hands are not that steady and the LCD is good but hard to read on the S95 in the sunlight. For me, sharper pics and sharper video. The weight is great, holding it is great. The articulating LCD should be nice. It has a bigger battery and might survive a short drop :-). Not pocketable and more expensive vs. the S95 --- especially now. Of course, a slower lens.

I'm keeping this or a D3100 (so far, slightly sharper pics but worse video for some reason). (Prices and even weight not very different --- D3100 has 18-55VR). I wouldn't want larger except for special purposes.

it is a common misconception but the lens on the G series is NOT slower than the S series when the whole focal range is considered. it may start slower at the wide end (2.8 to 2) but you don't have to zoom very far before the G becomes just as fast and then PASSES the S series in speed, being is faster at the far end of the S range plus it goes longer and remains faster! so unless you are only taking photos at efl 28mm to about 55, the S is NOT faster.

PaulRivers did a nice comparison chart of aperture range at various focal lengths and posted it in at least one thread that I can recall. Paul is a big fan of the S series and rightfully so -- it is a delightful camera and many prefer it to the G series for many valid reasons. Faster overall aperture range is NOT one of them.

and you may want to check the weights -- the D3100 plus kit lens combo is almost TWICE as heavy as the G12 (@770g to 410g).

Hope you enjoy both of your new toys. : )

I have an older G10 and a Nikon D300. Love them both. D300 for sports. G10 can handle almost everything else. : ) Ok, everything between ISO 80-100 maybe. LOL!

I love my D300, but it is nice to not have to lug around a big kit sometimes. : )

Have fun, post some samples when you get a chance. : )

I had a G12 for a short time, no fault of the camera I no longer have it. A sixty foot drop finished it off. My other cameras are Ds mkII's , mkIII's and a 550D. I was surprised at the G12 quality, I actually think it did colour better than a 550D I own, noise was very well controlled. A great little camera, if I see one on offer when it's replacement is announced I will snap it up.The likely extra mp's of a newer model will not make a lot of difference to me for a pocket camera.

Kevin.
