Dear all NEX fans,

As the title says, as many from you, I'm VERY interested in this adaptor and in particular, how it performs on different NEX-devices, as well as how different A-mount lenses perform on it.

There are already a couple of people on this forum that already have this adaptor and to these people I'd like to extend a warm invitation to make a review of the device.

The adaptor makes the NEX a very interesting device, from being very "petitte" to change to a full-fledged DSLR with all the following advantages.

Also anyone who has any information regarding this device is very much welcome to post! In fact, anyone who has a say is welcome to post away :-)
I hope hearing from all of you soon!

Thank you!

I tried the LA-EA2 with all of my Alpha lenses. It works well with older lenses, such as Minolta 50mm 1.4 and old Minolta 100-400. It even works Minolta 500mm reflex lens and with Sigma 12-24mm and Tamron 17-35. The focusing speed is comparable with A-900. The only thing which I could not try would be OS, because I don't have any Sigma OS lenses now.

Thanks for the replies!

Is the la-ea2 and nex combo something to be seen as a dslr rival?
Or is the ibis of dslr bodies something that you'd miss?

Also, how would the 18-250 sam and 28-75 perform on the la-ea2?
can they also be used for video, or is there too much noise from the lenses?

Concerning ibis, ive read that the olympus e-p3 has this and that it allows the camera to take lowlight pictures in lower iso's, when compared to the nex...delivering comparable IQ?

What would you pick, e-p3 with m43 lenses, or nex-5n/la-ea2/alpha lenses, comparing af speed, sharpnesz, iso performance and ibis vs no ibis?

Special Notes from Sony:

1. AF not available with STF lenses and teleconverters.

2. Teleconverter lenses and Minolta Xi lenses are not compatible.

3. Aperture setting for video capture is fixed at the maximum aperture of the lens or f/3.5, whichever is lower (AF-C).

My experience is with Canon 7D and canon lenses: 24-70L, 100L IS, Tokina 11-16, 100-400L and Zeiss 35 F2.

I can say that the Canon 7D combo with any Canon lenses are still faster focus with similar image quality (except high ISO) than the NEX 5N and LA-EA2 + alpha lenses or emount lenses.

Having say this I love my 5N because of the small size and the low noise high ISO capabilities. The following is my usage:

5N + 16 f2.8 emount: wide angle shots
5N + 18-200 Emount: day light walk around
5N + LA-EA2 + 35 f1.8 SAM DT: night time low light and also portrait

5N + LA-EA2 + 100 f2.8 macro: macro, sport in low light and some distance portrait
5N + LA-EA2 + 70-300 SSM G: sport in day light

Wow, thats some serious setup you've got there!
If any lens, i think id pick the 18-250 and the 50mm.

How would this setup compare to a olympus e-p3 with a couple of lenses(see my previous post)?

In the end, the nex with alpha lenses will be quite a bit more expensive...i've already mailed a sony store near my town, asking if it would be possible to test the nex and la-ea2 combo...not sure if thatll work.
Living in the middle of nowhere doesnt help :P

Hello
I would ask to Minh C Nguyen if could post some pics using his LEA2 combos.
Could You take pics with each lens combo at:
  • normal ISO
  • 800 ISO
  • 1600 ISO
  • 3200 ISO
You could be my hero :) because I have to decide if buy NEX-5n + LEA2.
I've just sold my NEX-5

I got a second question.
How's possible or how do You use remote/wired external flash with NEX-5n+LEA2?

I DO REALLY THANKYOU.

So doesn't this adapter solve the problem of having not enough native lenses?

Also, is the translucent mirror worth it? I mean, for telephoto lenses it might be good but don't you lose IQ for the same reason as in the SLT cameras? The high ISO performance is worse? Is it possible that the original adapter might be a better choice for shooting high ISO despite its slow autofocus?

I think it is more than worth it, I just wish someone would make an extensive video/review of the adaptor! :)

Bump (I don't know if this is allowed?)

Anyhow, I'd like to, again, invite people with any LA-ea2 setup to share their experiences, and hopefully, a video review of sorts?

Thank you :)

This request will be a lot of work for me ;-)

I basically used photozone.com to base my decision for purchasing these lenses.

Even though most of the lens review was for the Alpha cameras but I found that they are very accurate in their review and I believe (in my opinion) that the quality is the same on the NEX 5N camera. I really like the quality of the LA-EA2 and the alpha lenses that I got. They are great.

As far as your request, I can do for one lens (you choose which one and let me know).

Hey Minh!

Thanks for stopping by again :) very glad to hear from you.

I think the 18-200, as the general purpose megazoom would be a good lens to review.
I hope this is ok for you.

Would you please include the following in your video:
Af performance, moving subjects possible?
Af performance in video, is it usable for this? How loud is the autofocus?
How sharp/quality of pictures are you getting out of this combo?
The more extensive your video, the better!

If you happen to find some spare time, any other lens you wish to show us is more than welcome ;) even if it's just a quick AF test!

As a matter of fact, I'm actually quite interested in the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8.
Read some reviews and it seems to be better than its sony counterpart!
Also quite cheap at around 300euro.

Looking forward to your reply!
Thanks again,
Kind regards,

Hi Deso,

Isn't this thread about the LA-EA2 adapter? Your request for the 18-200 lens emount doesn't have anything to do with the adpater. If you're interested in the 18-200, I can send you some examples that I already have. What would you like to see?

Minh

Hello Minh,

Sorry for the confusion, ive read your post too quickly.

I misread that you had an 18-200 emount, i thought you meant you had an 18-200 amount! :)

Clearly, i know about the emount lens and am not very interested in it at this point :)

i suppose you could test your 70-300 ssm lens, although it is waaaay out of my budget!
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards.

Hello,
I would chose the 100mm f 2.8 macro to test.

I actually use a very sharp razor Micro nikkor 55 f3.5 (that's macro) and I love it.

I use it for portraits and very high detailed pictures but it's manual and sometime i "lose the moment" to take the picture.

I'd be very glad If You could post a few pictures, especially portraits at normal, mid and high ISO.

I do really thankyou

I tried the LA-EA2 with all of my Alpha lenses. It works well with older lenses, such as Minolta 50mm 1.4 and old Minolta 100-400.
Could you eleborate on how well the LA-EA2 works with those older lenses ?

It'd be interesting to learn what kind of performance can be expected with lenses from the 80s/90s with the srew AF .

I happen to own the Minolta 100-400 APO, and plan to get the adapter only for this one .
