than winding sound at shutter release...I don't like it. Does anyone know if a repair shop could silence it ? thx.

But the other Canons like the D60 don't make the whinning noise. Just a click. I think the whinny noise is added. Isnt it ?

No. T2i and 60D have completely different shutter/mirror mechanisms.

The mirror flips up, the shutter opens, the shutter closes and the mirror flips down. It's mechanical, it's going to make some noise. And no they don't "add whiny noise". The Canon D60 is an older camera. Do you have one or are you talking about the 60D? My 60D sounds just fine. The higher up in camera class you move ("entry level" vs "prosumer" vs "professional"), the better sounding the shutters become. But that's just my humble opinion.

I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure.

Do you mean like a .wav file or something to make it sound cool when you push the button? No.

Do you use built in flash? Is noise present at every shot or only after the pop up flash fires?

Different cameras make different shutter release noises. What you're talking about is indeed not found on other cameras like the Canon D60, 20D, or 7D. The cheaper 400D and similar cameras from Canon and others make a squeaking noise after the mirror lifts. The 20D had a loud mirror slap, but it didn't squeak, and the D60 was quieter. I'm not sure what causes this noise, but I can tell when someone is using one of these cameras. Click, squeak! At 3 fps... squeak, squeak, squeak! Then the 1D opens at 8fps... click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click! It sounds so much more solid, even better in Silent Mode. All you hear is the muffled sound of the mirror, while the click of the shutter is barely noticeable. If you want to get rid of the noise, I suggest buying a better camera.

--Mine makes the same noise as the new T3i in the store. My 50d did not, my D7k does not...the one on utube is quieter than the new one in the store too. It just attracts too much attention. ( I like it for the light wt)

it's in the menu...shutter sound on/off. it's in there. Don't stop looking until you find it.

The mirror action of all rebels is spring down, motor up. So it snaps open because of the mechanical spring, then the motor needs to fight against the spring to move it back in place which whines more than the xxD cameras, which use motor down and motor up mechanism, there's no spring involved so no 'whining'.

Some film slr cameras used to have automatic film transport which made a lot more noise than all current DSLR cameras.

Try coughing while you take the picture to mask the camera whine ;)

Cough and a sneeze to cover the duration until the buffer is full? Easily done when shooting raw ;)
three and a half coughs per second isn't easy. Easier than 12 C.P.S. with a 1DX of course
