What to know about the Coolpix 990?

Can't do that in an email message...strongly advise you to get the eBook for the 990 written by Peter iNova. It'll tell you all you need to know and lots more. A very worthwhile investment. B & H has them...or you can order from Peter: http://www.digitalsecrets.net/secrets/s.html

P.S. I have a 990 and wouldn't give it up for anything...got an Oly 2100uz and Sony DSC F717 after the 990...Incredible for macros and much more. Big beef, though...difficult to focus in low light.

I agree with all that has been said so far. I have a D100 and in some ways, the 990 beats it. Get iNova's e-book, switch to manual, lower the in-camera contrast and sharpening, add 0.3-0.7 exp. comp and go crazy!
Can anyone tell me what I need to know about the Nikon Coolpix 990?
I recently bought one... tell me some negative and positive aspects
of the camera and some helpful hints on using it (if you can)

Thanks!

I don't know if there are any "must know" facts about the 990, no more so than with any other camera. It has it's little quirks like they ALL do, but it's a dang good camera. Mine has a penchant for the color red, which I tone down with my graphics editor to suit my taste. It's getting to be one of the older models now, so it exhibits a little more noise than the newer ones like the 4500. I bought a 5700 this past summer, but I won't get rid of the 990, I still think that much of it. Here are a few pictures made with mine..

Love your name there, BTW!

Here's some tips:

As with all of the Coolpix line of cameras, the low-light autofocus is kind of crappy, just be aware of this.

If you're planning on taking a lot of action shots, it's not the best camera in the world.

Another important thing to know is that the flash is placed right next to the lens - That means red-eye is a huge problem. If you're going to be taking a lot of indoor shots of people/animals, you want to get an external flash. See if you can find a Versatec Rx flash bracket and get an external flash, then you're set.

Like most digicams, it goes through batteries in no time flat. You'll want to invest in some reachargeables.

Those details aside, the 990 is a great camera. I just ugraded to a 5700, but I stil can't bear to let go of my 990. I've taken a lot of great shots with it, and I'm just too tempted to keep it around as a back-up cam. It's worth way more to me than the $350 or so I could get for it on EBay or somewhere.

Good luck, fellow mushie-lover!
