Good news! Fuji will repair sticky blades even after warranty period

Trust the UK to lead on doing the right thing. Instead of messing around ordering overseas, why not pressure your own country to follow suit?

Regardless, if the problem is a handful of cameras this is simply good PR from them, and shouldn't cost much in real terms.

Poor girl....only has one connection.
She is gonna need that connection desperately after the phone calls will come in the next weeks from customers asking her to confirm her statement on behakf of Fuji Co.

Remember that Fuji has a WORLDWIDE guarantee so we can all send our sticky blades to the UK.....
Incorrect. Fujifilm USA's warranty states quite clearly that you return your camera to Fujifilm USA. No allowances for other countries.

I went in to purchase the X100 from the Fujifilm UK store website but was surprised to see they do not have the X100 listed for sale.

I've sent the following letter to Fujifilm UK. I have emailed it and will now also fax it though for good measure.

For all those who like the idea of purchasing an X100 where you won't have a worry in the world about the "sticky blades" fault after warrantee has expired I'll update here with the response I get.

For those interested here is my letter to Fujifilm UK Ltd ....

Dear Sarah,

Greetings from the land 'Down Under'.

I note with a great deal of relief your recent comments ...

"Dear David
Thank you for your email and sorry for the delay in replying to you.

Unfortunately we do not offer SuperWarranty on an X100 as this is classed as a professional camera. If you experience any problems after the 12 months,we will address the issues as and when. With regards to the known issue, if you experience problems with these after the 12 months warranty is up, we will resolve these free of charge.
Sorry for any inconvience this may cause.
Thanks
Sarah Phillipson"

I am in Australia and am wanting to purchase the Fujifilm FinePix X100 but have held off over concerns my camera may develop the well known "sticky blades" fault which is currently being reported by many X100 users world wide.

My concerns only relate to the obvious - that my X100 may develop the issue after the warrantee has expired, thus leaving me with an unusable defective product.

The news that Fujifilm UK will resolve the issue free of charge after the warrantee period has expired is very welcome indeed. Fujifilm UK should be praised for taking this honourable position. This will no doubt serve to reassure all future X100 owners that Fujifilm UK are very serious about supporting their leading edge products which further strengthens the fine reputation Fujifilm has developed over the years in being an industry leader.

To this end, dare I suggest you may see some healthy international sales figures be recorded, starting with myself.

I wish to purchase a Fujifilm FinePix X100, however, I have been in to your Fujifilm Store website but can not locate the X100 amongst the available cameras currently on the site.

Please advise how to go about purchasing a Fujifilm FinePix X100.

I look forward to your reply.

Kind regards

You could by one in Norway. We have a 5 year consumer warranty for fabrication defects on elektronic goods.
And all Fuji cams come from/ via Fuji UK. :-)

Thanks for that info. Yes, we have strong consumer laws here in AU too that sees the retailer liable for any defective product they sell.

But at the end of the day I'd much rather just plonk it in an airbag back to Fuji UK than have the unpleasant hassles of having to take things further through the consumer law processes here - it could be months before the case is even looked at let alone get a resolution.

Back to Fuji UK and its fixed. Simple.

Cheers

We have a similar policy here in the England with the Sale of Goods Act which gives us 6 years for an 'inherent fault' and I'm guessing this is why Fuji UK have made this commitment.

However as the SOG does not even apply people living in Scotland, they have similar but completely separate legislation, I doubt that it would apply to foreign buyers.

Hi Stephen,

You may be right but I hope you are wrong.

I will be purchasing it in the UK, that's where the sale will be made, where it transfers to my ownership but it then of course has to be sent to me.

It would be very disappointing to learn the guarantee is only valid if the camera is used in the UK. What if you visit Australia on holiday from the UK and it develops the "sticky blades" fault while you are here? Or what if you migrate to Australia from the UK, what then?

Ideally Fuji Australia needs to step up to the plate and follow Fuji UK's lead. Moreover, this should be Fujifilm's global position on the matter now, for all countires.

Lets hope Fujifilm UK are not the only honourable arm within the Fujifilm empire in relation to the way this issue is to be dealt with when warrantees expire. Hey Fujifilm Japan, are you reading this?

My thought on it anyway.

I'm not sure that it's necessarily Fuji UK being more 'honourable' that Fuji in in other countries; more that they have no option but to repair the aperture blades for up to 6 years after purchase. If they refused a UK citizen could easily make a claim in the small claims court and would have no problem proving that such a well documented fault was 'inherent'. I may be wrong, but I don't think this option would be available to someone living outside of the UK.

Another thing to bear in mind is that when I sent in my X100 for repair, Fuji sent me the prepaid Royal Mail packaging to return it. I'd be surprised if they were willing to bear the cost of shipping it backwards and forward to Australia.

The email in question was sent to me a few months back after my camera developed sticky blades for the first time (I now have sticky blades again). I inquired why Fuji didn't offer an extended warranty on the X100 here in the UK.

Please bear in mind that the response was a personal email to one customer in one country (the UK). It may not be representative of Fuji's worldwide policy regarding after-warranty repairs for the sticky blade problem. It may not even be representative of Fuji UK's overall policy.

David.

Yes, that was my impression too. I hardly think an email from a service tech represents a change in Fuji's warranty policy. Perhaps something is coming down the pipeline but until it looks more official, I would not trust this.

Thank you David, I take your point.

Hopefully with Fujifilm UK what is good for one is good for two and so on. But I do apprecaite this is only a Fujifilm UK thing.

They may decide not to offer this guarantee to those whose primary place of residence is not in the UK. Otherwise I would imagine the UK could quickly become the primary preferred place to buy X100's no matter what country you are in - something tells me this would not go down well with Fujifilm X100 distributors located in other countures.

Either way, it will be mighty interesting to hear what their response is to my email/fax. Fingers crossed.

Thanks again for your initial heads up and for your follow up clarification.

Cheers

I think it really depends on the local company.

Once I had out of warranty and out of country bought Fujitsu laptop that I submerged in water. You see I did everything tat would normally break any warranty.

I brought it to Fujitsu canada and what you know, they repaired it free of charge, practically replaced everything inside and i didn't even have to pay any shipping (they shipped it to closest outlet so I can pick it up). So it really depends on the company if they stand behind their product or not.

Since then I always seen very fondly any fujitsu computers because I very well remember that they give me free help when I needed it.

Ok, fujitsu is not related to Fuji (there is some history, but now it is more a Siemens) but still my point is there are some companies that actually do more than required by law and don't ask questions.

I said I would update here when I receved a reply to the above letter to Fujifilm. I am gleaning from their reply they may not have even read my letter so I've sent another politely requesting they re-read it in the hope I can get a half decent reply - although I apprecaite they may not want to spend time answering people from outside the UK.

Anyway, here is their reply from the "The MyFinePix Team"....

Thank you for your email, sorry for the delay in replying to you.

We would recommend that you contact FujiFilm Austrailia, they will be able to give you more information on your local suppliers of the X100. Please follow this link:

Hope this information helps.
