5n and Rokinon 85mm 1.4...

Hey can you post a shot with this lens on your Nex? Can you also comment about the build quality and manual focus feel? I read something about the aperture ring being flimsy--what's your opinion about that?

I don't have an 85mm lens--I skipped this FL for 100mm. But this lens is very interesting indeed.

I'd be happy too - will try to get one up tonight.

In terms of build and feel, I think its a very well made lens, with the exception of the lens cap, which never seems to stay on. Aperture ring feels solid to me. It's a $250 lens, but feels better made than lenses I've used that cost 2, 3 or 4 times that amount.

Hmmm..my rational for skipping 85mm was:

1) I cannot afford (and I would feel guilty if I did) every single focal length
2) 50mms are even more of a bargain @ f1.4 and 85mm FL is so close.

So I went with 50mm f1.4 and 100mm f2. But I never considered this lens in my equation because I wasn't aware that it existed...every other 85mm f1.4 is much more expensive you know.

I think you have a winner here. Perhaps I will sell one of my 100mms and give this lens a try. Noooooo...I can't do that! Argh.

Which available mount has the shortest Nex adapter? Thanks for the upcoming picture and previous samples from this fine lens above.

Ah, the joys of lens lust ;)

Not sure which of the mounts has the shortest adapter - I'm guessing they're all similar, but could be wrong. I already had the alpha mount version, so easy choice for me.

If you're interested, there's a long thread I started about this lens on dyxum a while back (also has a link to a long thread on dpreview in one of the Nikon forums) - tons of good info about the lens, as well as sample pics:

Just some quick snaps from tonight:

Lens mounted on the 5n (via rainbowimaging alpha to NEX adapter):

And mounted on the camera, next to the 18-55 kit lens, for comparison:

It's about as good as it gets for an 85mm 1.4 - can hold its own against some much more expensive glass.

If you want a smaller alternative, check out the Minolta Rokkor 85mm f2 - not as fast, but f2 is still very good. They're not easy to find though. Wish I'd held onto mine. Here's some info from when I had one on a GH1 last year:

Amazing lens for the money, I just wish it were a little smaller and lighter.

Just a note: You might have opted for a slightly warmer WB in the initial portrait shot.

Just a gateway drug to the 35/1.4.
Ha! Maybe down the road. In the meantime, I have the inexpensive, but excellent Sony 35mm 1.8 from my alpha that works well on the nex.

So should I get the Sony Alpha mount version and buy an Alpha > NEX adapter?

I was looking at the Nikon mount (even though I have the 5N) because I recently got a Nikon F > NEX adapter for my Ais lenses.

I do plan on buying the LA-EA2 at some point, so maybe I should buy the Sony Alpha mount version of the Rokinon, right?

What an incredible bargain of a lens.

If you plan on getting the LA-EA2, you might as well get the Sony version. But, without adding a focus confirm chip to the lens, you won't have any other advantage using the LA-EA2 (obviously, no focusing, and you won't be able to set the metering through the camera either). So if you use any other adapters (Canon, Nikon), it will work just fine with any of those NEX adapters too.
