I looked here and at other sources for info on updating to Lion. If you read enough you will scare yourself from doing it!!

However, I took the leap last night. I know I would have liked to read this post before installing for piece of mind.

The install was extremely easy. The software took about 45 minutes to download. When I went to install it showed that it would take 32 minutes. The first 32 minutes took 45 which is okay but for the first 5 or so minutes it looked as though the system froze. I waited longer and the whole instal took about 50 minutes. No worries, just a little stress wondering if it froze at first.

After that there was one java update to click yes to and that was it. Super easy.

I know I'm WAY late to the update game but I didn't want to do it until I knew bugs, if any, were worked out.

I really like the new interface. Multiple desktops rule....

I am very disappointed with the app store download speeds. I have a relatively fast connection at the school and routinely download HD movies very quickly. The Lion update is now on hour 6 and appears to be less than half-way done. I'll have to let the MBP run all night in my office.

As a test, I downloaded a Doctor Who episode this evening, almost 2 Gig, in 30 minutes. The problem is not my network and is not related to the first day fury of a new release.

If Apple wants to move everything to net downloads, they had better speed up their servers. Apple's iTunes runs fast, why can't the Mac App Store?

I downloaded it in about 17 min. My connection set the limit in this case.

Then you got really lucky. I checked the MBP before I left this evening. Everything thing else, from Chrome to email to iTunes is running like gangbusters. The Mac App Store? Running all day and still estimates about 4.5 hours left! What is that, one bit per second? I fail to see this as a network problem as everything else runs fine.

Oh well, I should have copied the file from a colleague's kid (Arrrr!) instead of paying for it like a chump... OK, I'm just angry... I'll calm down now and hope that Apple can get their act together with this Mac app store nonsense.

Do you honestly think that your performance is common or common enough for the Mac App Store? Don't you think this would be big news if it were anything but remotely common?

Or to put it more bluntly, how many 700 MP software updates have you downloaded int he past from Apple (a lot of OS updates and iOS updates have been in that size range)? 700 MP is about a fifth of the complete Lion install. If your current experience were representative, all these OS updates must have taken multiple hours themselves to download. Thus you would also have to be in favour of offering each point release as a physical DVD. If you were consistent you would have to say that these downloadable software updates are really nonsense.

You have been hit by an unfortunate bug/issue. In the same way as your download is being held up by something, anything you order by mail could get lost for a moment and turn up much later than normal.

You don't condem FedEx to be complete nonsense just because bungle up one package delivered to you.

Downloaded fine for me over DSL. Speed was limited only by my connection.

If you have network disk storage (NAS) and use TimeMachine watch out, not all manufacturers support Lion yet. Your backups may be inaccessible.

I won't be upgrading till I get a new computer . the MBP and G-4 are OK on 10-5.8 . not even sure the G-4 can handle it .

Well, I installed Lion this morning after about 1.5 days of downloading. It took roughly 45 minutes to install.

Much to my surprise, Lion works extremely well with my 4G RAM MBP. I even got back about 10 G of hard drive space.

Even with indexing going on, Lion reacts much faster than Snow. The scrolling issue was resolved in about 15 minutes (credit heavy iPad and Touch use). Every program works. The only thing I changed was to get rid of the "swipe to another page", boy was that annoying.

All in all, despite the super long download, I am very happy (so far).

Thanks , I knew it would not handle Snow leopard , But was not sure about Lion .
Seems like every new cat , I lose a program or 2 .
Tectool and drive genus are really the only ones I keep updated .

It's Intel Mac only, no PowerPC need apply. In fact, you can't run 10.6 on the G4.

As for the MBP, unless it's a Core Duo (rather than Core 2 Duo or later) it should run Lion just fine, as long as you max the memory to 4GB or more. You'll need to upgrade the MBP to Snow Leopard

The which is pretty cheap these days from someone like Other World Computing (macsales.com). Or you can go to Ramseeker.com for links to the best prices for RAM.

Initially, you had to upgrade to Snow Leopard before you could download Lion. Now Apple offers the Lion installer on a thumb drive for $70. Probably a good idea if your internet access is slow or unreliable. I made a thumb drive (and SD card) installer from the App Store download for the first system I installed Lion on, and then updated the rest from them.

Worked like a charm.

It's too late for you now, but when I encountered a very slow download, I stopped it, then restarted a bit later. Second time it pretty much maxed my 'net connection, and off we went.

That is one of my very favorite features. YMDV. :}
