The video cam may easily be a separate body. I expect to hear about it for the Nov 3 announcement in Hollywood. One possible reason for a separate body would be for full time video AF via a mirrorless design. For another approach, they can bin down 4, 9 or 16 pixels to get a low noise HD frame for video and also make use of a high MP, FF sensor. Several possible directions and strategies, but I very much doubt Canon will leave the video market on the table.

If the 5D mk3 is going to be the top of the line high megapixel body then to me the most obvious improvements would be a 100% viewfinder and sealing. There the features people have come to expect from a top of the line body and would mesh well with its intended purpose as a landscape/studio camera.

FPS and AF seem much less important for those uses, the latter could do with improving but I'm guessing that 7D level would be acceptable to many if it cut down on price or lead to money being spent elsewhere.

The 7D actually seems like the most likely body to get the old pro 45 point AF system and higher FPS in order to keep its satus as the "crop sports/action camera".

Canon decides that the 1Ds will move into a medium format camera.

I agree that 5D3 will probably get a high MP count, but its autofocus will still be its tradeoff.

Canon was simply struggling to sell the 1Ds3. The cost equation just didn't add up. That is why Nikon didn't release a D700 with 24mp. They had to recoup their investment. The 5D2 has been an incredibly successful camera for Canon and the 5D3 is gonna be a killer cam as well.
