Sometimes reading the forum I wonder if some on here look at a photo and go "yes" because it works as a photo or do they look for faults -not quite sharp at the edge, bokeh at bit messy etc etc etc,

If i had a photo challenge website i'd have the ratings go ling this...

0-3 points for how well the photo matches the challenge subject

0-3 points for how well the photo is technically (aperture, shutter speed, focus, fixed aberrations and distortions etc.)
0-3 points for how well it looks to the voter subjectively
1 bonus point that can be awarded

final mark out of 10

I'd also limit the challenges to 50 photos and you'd have to vote on every photo, if not then the votes won't count and if you're a submitter then we'd need a smart algorithm to weed out stink-votes, if a large number of stink votes are detected then your entry gets disqualified

I think photos can be rated in a number of ways, i personally look at the things above, something i skip over the technical if i really like the photo sometimes i skip over the subjective if my eyes can't see past the technical.

Photos on this forum.... that is a good one!

For me, if they are just posting photos, it is all about how it works or does not work as a photograph to my eye...

If they are posting with a specific lens and asking what we think about the photos or the performance of the lense / camera then I look for more technical things.

Butt on this forum, unless you are a brillliant photographer, or in with the in-crowd, the photos can often slip by....

Whenever I look at a photo, here or anywhere else, my first reaction is always based on whether it works as a photo; but, sasly, many photos don't work that well. That's just a fact of nature - finding excellence is tough anywhere, not just in photography.
or do they look for faults - not quite sharp at the edge, bokeh at bit messy etc etc etc,
I rarely look for faults; mostly the reasons a photo doesn't work are because the faults are pretty obvious. Most of the time I just move on. If someone asks for C&C I give an honest opinion, explaining it as well as I can.

Of course, a shot can work as a photo and have defects. In other words, it can be good but not great. Shots like this are easy to comment on - it's always nice to praise something, even if the praise is followed by some criticism.

Our camera club has a once a month judged competition for members. There are three judges. One has to be a nonmember of the club. Below is the criteria that is used by the judges. We also have classes for training judges. I think it's a reasonable approach.
