Took my 5N to the aquarium to give its first real test. Here are my notes
  • Touch screen implementation is very good. I especially liked the feature that lets you touch a picture point during the autoreview to get an enlarged view. It is the most practical way of confirming focus and only this feature alone makes the touchscreen worthwhile.
  • The 16mm lens may not be very sharp but it is so useful in many cases. It is fast, can focus on close objects, so light and easy to handle. I ended up taking most of the pictures with this lens. My 28mm f/2.8 Minolta MD and kit zoom didn't get any use.
  • Low light capabilities of this camera is impressive. Set it to aperture priority, auto ISO, use a fast lens and you only check your focus. A dark place like aquarium does not give you much trouble.
  • The flip display is a life saver. No way I could have taken very low or high point shots while sticking the camera against the tank glass. Your viewfinder will not work there!
  • Those aquarium tank glass doesn't have any coating! They introduce lots of aberration and they have many scratches and finger prints:) It is very tough to get a decent picture in a very dark place while the fish move and the other people push on.
  • It is very easy to get lost in the menu system. I couldn't find how to turn off "AF illumination light" because I was searching for "AF assist light" all the time. But I think I will get used to it.
I am liking this camera more and more but I still miss my Minolta A1. I wish Sony rereleased A1 with the sensor, LCD, EVF, NEX mount from 5N.

Here are a few pictures that I took with the 16mm

and here are the full sizes

me too~

nice shot btw! I am looking forward to my trip to aquarium as well and see how does the 30M35 and the fisheye with 16mm perform :D
love it... damn 5n!! I don't want to change my NEX-3~.... no no no...

Nice! Love the shot of the red bellies!

I did the same thing--changed to the 16 and left it there after a few shots with the 18200. I liked using that small camera in there!

Thought I'd piggy-back on your thread for anyone interested in aquarium shots.

Smiling indeed! You already said the exactly the same thing like a month ago:)
Now you mentioned it, I remember reading your post.

You have some very nice shots in that post and yes that little 16mm is a gem. Sometimes tests and reviews don't mean much, you just have to use a thing to know if it is good or not.

Thanks. Just a small suggestion before your visit, go there early Sunday morning when nobody is around yet. That way the tank glass would be still clean and the fish kind of not bored (or afraid) of people.

Thanks. I usually wait for a few generations to change a camera because that way I can master my current setup and can appreciate the new technology better. NEX3 is a very nice camera and should be good for some more time. NEX5N sensor and touch screen are very good but you know next year there will be better cameras
