I got this combo (yay) but (boo) I noticed that wide open either the focus is a little inconsistent or my copy just might back focus a bit. Yes, I know that shooting wide open means that the slightest little shift can make things OOF.

Anyone else have issues? Better at lower rather than higher ISOs for some reason also, even thought the shutter is not as high. Also was better when I turned off the face detection,

Brian. Too much stuff; not enough stuff.

I would also set the AF box close to as small as you can make it for shooting at f1.4 to narrow where the camera might be focusing. As you've noted, focus does not have to be that far off at f1.4. I imagine the AF system is working within its' specs. You just need to tighten your technique when shooting at f1.4.

Yeah. I'm less sure it is just technique. I shoot a lot with a 5DII and 50 1.2L, without this inconsistency. I have -- I believe -- the custom settings on a single box--with all the face and eye priority stuff disabled. Even when I shoot at static items, and look at the more smaller box it is behind sometimes. And sometimes not. With tripod.

I do believe that the GH2 i incapable of back/front focussing, due to the focus system.

GH2 + 20mm f/1.7 and nothing else

While I believe that CDAF provides more consistent focus than PDAF because there's less to get out of alignment, I certainly don't know enough about the engineering of CDAF autofocus to say for certain that the OP isn't experiencing a real issue.

Also, it might be that his lens is not aligned correctly and, for example, when the top of the image is in focus, the bottom of the image is back focused. I've experienced this problem before. It's more likely to happen on a very fast lens because there's less tolerance for error.
