Dear Kodak, I love your C195, Z915, Z950, and now my new Z990, but your outsourced customer service is really weak. My three week old Z990 has developed a humming sound that starts as soon as I turn it on and won't shut off. It does it in all modes, except video. I have been having a fast draining battery issue and this humming or cycling noise could well be the problem. I called tech support, get routed to their Philippine call center, and their suggestion was that the problem was caused by the camera set to continuous auto focus mode. Ok, but it does it on single or auto focus mode...there is no off mode like on the Z915. And then tech rep tells me it's normal on all Kodak cameras regardless of settings. Humm? Has anyone with their Z990 experienced this humm/chatter sound even when held on a table absolutely still? Next step was to take batteries out, replace and turn back on..no go and still humming away. They then tell me to send it in and repair time would be approximately 2 weeks with no assurance it would be the same camera and it would probably be a refurbished one.

Question: since I'm a week or so past the normal return period, can someone share their experience with Kodak's repair service? If negative, I think I'm going to plead my case with Staples and see if they will exchange. And no, I did not buy their insurance protection plan ($69.00) as they send all problems/repairs to Kodak and not store exchanged like the rep said...the fine print on these plans reveal much..as in buyer beware.

Bottom line is that I love the camera for IQ at all lengths...despite a few interface quirks. Hopefully I can get it fixed or replaced promptly.

My friend I know exactly how you feel. I exchanged and sent in my one newer Kodak over and over again because they exchange your camera from an outsourced refurbisher in OH. Believe me finally when I begged the Kodak repair facility to repair it for me my digicam came back in first class shape and operates like it never did before. Precision Camera and Video repair is outstanding and they are a first class repair agency and they are quick with the repairs seldom taking over 2 weeks. I now use this repair facility for all my digital camera repairs currently and every other repair turned out perfectly.

I am sorry you are having all these problems. Best of luck with your repair and or replacement.

All the best, Gary N W SFO

Hi Jim, I had problems with my first Z990 and Kodak instructed me to send the cam to their repair facility in Ohio. Within two weeks the repair facility notified me that they recommended a replacement and so Kodak sent me another one which I have been using since.

Gary and Lorenzo, thanks for your insight and suggestions. The camera is going back to be evaluated and after talking to a senior technician here in the US, am confident they will get it fixed.

I have showed a number of people in our photo group some of the Z990 images and all were very impressed with this cams IQ..even at the far end. In fact, one member was showing off her new Z990 after selling her Fuji HS20 which she claimed was very difficult to capture a decent low light image (without flash) and video that was really lacking. THis gal is a professional portrait/commercial photographer and we are all looking forward to seeing what she can get out of the Kodak. This camera may be the best sleeper out there..especially when available at the $250. range.
Thanks again.
